Our story began in 1957 under the auspices of the Atlanta Music Club, when Mrs. Charles Chalmers, Mrs. Ruth Dabney Allen, and Ruth Kern worked together to create an orchestra for serious amateur musicians in Atlanta. In the fall of that year, seventeen players gathered in the home of Mrs. Andrew Fairlie to explore the possibility of forming a new community orchestra. That vision became the Atlanta Community Orchestra, which gave its first free public concert on May 12, 1958, under the baton of Harry Kruger. In time, the organization became the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra.

In the next step of the evolution of our orchestra, we have renamed to the Atlanta Metropolitan Symphony. This name change honors our history as a music group while presenting a stronger and more contemporary identity that reflects the expanding role we now play throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area.

For nearly seven decades, we have remained committed to providing meaningful performance opportunities for dedicated volunteer musicians and free concerts for audiences across Atlanta. And we are thrilled to continue this mission as the Atlanta Metropolitan Symphony. Thank you for being here and supporting us for so many decades. We will continue to transform communities with the power of music as the AMS ✨
