Artist Spotlight: Doobie Powell
Some musicians master a genre. Others spend their careers moving beyond its boundaries. Doobie Powell belongs to the latter.
Born into a family steeped in music, the Hartford native is the son of jazz musician Hubert Powell Jr. and vocalist Jacquelyn Powell. Music was never simply something he discovered. It was part of his upbringing, and that foundation would eventually shape one of the more distinctive sounds at the intersection of gospel, jazz, funk, and neo-soul.
A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and composer, Powell has built a career that moves between the stage and the studio. His musical credits include collaborations with Robert Glasper, Kim Burrell, Kelly Price, Harry Connick Jr., and Karen Clark Sheard.
But beyond the impressive résumé is an artist whose work is unmistakably his own.
Across projects including Finding Myself Again, All Things New, and Remedy, Powell has continued to explore the possibilities of his sound, bringing together the musical traditions that raised him with a contemporary sensibility.
On October 22, Doobie Powell brings that musical perspective to South City Jazz at St. James Live.
