In this playful class, we’ll explore how to build memorable characters using voice work, physicality, bold emotional choices, and relationships. By the end of the course, you’ll be jumping into scenes with confidence, creativity, and fully-formed characters that will take your improvised scene work to the next level!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Melissa Ulloa has been pursuing acting and theater as long as she can remember, and started doing improv at Palm Beach Community College in 2007. She attended The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she got her BA in Acting. She has since studied at iO, UCB, Magnet Theater & completed the Dad’s Garage Conservatory.

This class is an introduction to the Harold, the foundational long-form improv format created by Del Close and Charna Halpern. Students will learn the core mechanics of the format, including openings, group games, beats, edits, callbacks, and thematic connections, with a strong focus on using game to drive the longform organically.

Drawing from game-based approaches to longform popularized through the Upright Citizens Brigade style of play, students will explore how patterns emerge, evolve, and heighten across a full Harold through exercises, scene work, and full runs of the format.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Zack Bromberg is an improviser, teacher, producer, and filmmaker based in Atlanta. He’s been performing improv for over 25 years and has studied both narrative and game-based traditions, including the work of Keith Johnstone and the longform style developed at the Upright Citizens Brigade. He loves the intersection of narrative, game, emotional honesty, and very dumb comedy.

Zack performs with the team French and produces the monthly shows “French and Friends” at Java Lords and “Faust” at Dynamic El Dorado. His teaching focuses on ensemble-first improv, grounded relationships, strong point of view, and finding the game through honest behavior rather than forcing jokes.

Outside of improv, Zack works in documentary and commercial filmmaking and develops original live comedy and theater projects.
