Every October, the world celebrates Black Speculative Fiction Month.

SUBSUME went back to the source code to find our why.

Black Speculative Fiction Month 2026 — Acknowledging The Architects

Co-founders Milton J. Davis (MVmedia) and Balogun Ojetade (Roaring Lions Productions) join host Dedren Snead for a 50-minute conversation on how the month began at Atlanta's Auburn Avenue Research Library, the pioneers who paved the way, where Black Speculative Fiction stands today, and what's next for the movement.

This is a foundational record of Black Speculative Fiction history, told by the folks who built it.

The question is not what the future holds. Rather the question’s “HOW DO WE SHAPE IT?”

Liberation is an act of resistance.
Freedom is a practice.

At Black Futures Month, we asked what it truly means to design liberation — beyond slogans, beyond survival, and beyond permission.

This moment reminds us that Black freedom is built through choice, creation, and collective imagination.
Through sound.
Through culture.
Through refusing to be silenced or shaped by systems not made for us.

Liberation isn’t accidental.
It’s intentional.

“Africans on the continent often learn about African-Americans through a white lens.”

At Black Futures Month 2025, Inayah Bashir challenged a hard truth about perception, proximity, and the gaps in our shared story.

It was about clarity, connection, and rewriting narratives together.

The future is being designed now and We are no longer asking for permission to imagine.
We are designing liberation in real time.
Black Futures Month is a space for builders, creatives, technologists, and visionaries shaping what comes next.

The revolution will be digitized.
The future will be Black.
And you should be in the room.

If you believe the revolution will be digitized — this is your room.

Last Black Futures Month, we had the honour of hosting Jesse J. Holland — journalist, author, and cultural voice — for a powerful conversation that went far beyond comics and characters.

He explored the deeper relationship between the African man, Captain America, and Black Panther — not as entertainment, but as symbols of power, identity, legacy, and narrative ownership.

It wasn’t about superheroes.
It was about who tells our stories, who shapes our image, and how Black narratives travel across the world.

If you care about culture, representation, and meaningful conversations, this is a moment worth revisiting.

💬 Comment “CAPTAIN AMERICA” and we’ll send you the link to watch the full section.

🎟️ And if you want to experience conversations like this live,
Black Festivals Month 2026 is coming.
Get your tickets early and be part of the movement, the dialogue, and the future of Black storytelling.
