Join Atlanta Ballet at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on September 4 for Shows for Seedlings: Atlanta Ballet’s Fairytales with Friends. Families are invited to enjoy a morning of dance and storytelling as part of the Garden’s engaging children’s performance series.

What happens when a ballet becomes a moving painting?

Remi Wörtmeyer’s Significant Others draws inspiration from the bold colors, geometric forms, and multidisciplinary work of modern artist Sonia Delaunay. From vibrant, hand-painted costumes to striking circular set pieces, the ballet brings Delaunay’s ideas about color, movement, and art to life onstage.

But Sonia Delaunay was more than a “significant other.” Her influence stretched across painting, fashion, textiles, theater, and design, leaving a lasting mark on the art world and inspiring artists long after her time.

Before a costume ever reaches the stage, it begins with a vision. Costume Designer Emma Kingsbury is bringing the world of Melissa Hough’s Plagued Houses to life through costume renderings, fabric swatches, color, texture, and the many details that help shape the story audiences will eventually see onstage. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet and set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Hough’s world premiere is taking shape one detail at a time.

In Plagued Houses, choreographer Melissa Hough reimagines Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy through the conflict, violence, and forces surrounding its two young lovers. Set to Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fantasy-Overture, this world premiere invites audiences to experience a familiar story from an entirely new perspective.

Ahead of the premiere, Hough shares how the music became the “emotional architecture” of the ballet, how collaboration helped shape its world, and what she hopes audiences will discover within the work.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of costume designer Sandra Woodall. Sandra was an extraordinary artist whose remarkable work touched the Atlanta Ballet family and the wider worlds of dance and theater internationally.

We were incredibly fortunate to collaborate with Sandra and to bring numerous productions featuring her extraordinary work to the stage, including Yuri Possokhov’s reimagined The Nutcracker in 2018. Her designs did far more than costume our dancers and Centre for Dance Education students; they inspired audiences and performers alike. Sandra cared passionately about the dancers’ experience in her costumes, taking great pride in creating designs that made them feel beautiful, confident, and artistically connected to their roles.

Through her work with Atlanta Ballet, she leaves a lasting mark on our artistic history, and we are deeply grateful for the beauty, imagination, and inspiration Sandra shared with our artists and audiences.

It was a privilege to know her, collaborate with her, and bring her extraordinary vision to our stage. Her remarkable artistry and legacy will continue to live with us.

This is a 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 event, and no advance registration is required. Classes are first-come, first-served. Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move in.

*Classes and activities are subject to change. To enroll in Fall classes, a birth certificate is required for students ages 7 and under.
