✨️ Happy Pride Month! ✨️

Today we're highlighting pianist, composer, educator, and advocate Fred Hersch.

A 17-time Grammy-nominated artist, Hersch is widely recognized as one of the most influential voices in contemporary jazz. As one of the first openly gay, HIV-positive artists in jazz, he has helped expand LGBTQ+ visibility in the genre while using his platform to advocate for AIDS awareness and education.

The Schwartz Center was honored to welcome Fred Hersch and esperanza spalding () to our stage on January 19, 2023, during our 20th Anniversary Season. Together, they performed music from their acclaimed collaboration "Alive at the Village Vanguard", sharing an unforgettable evening of artistry and innovation with Atlanta audiences.

Join us as we celebrate the artists whose creativity, courage, and contributions continue to enrich our communities.

We’re celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the Schwartz Center with a spotlight on tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain! ✨

🥁 Born in Bombay, India in 1951, Zakir Hussain began training in Hindustani classical music at just seven years old under his father, legendary tabla master Allarakha Qureshi, before becoming one of the world’s most celebrated percussionists.

🌍 Throughout his career, Hussain brought Indian classical music to audiences around the globe through groundbreaking collaborations across genres—including his April 2023 performance at the Schwartz Center alongside Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia.

🎶 His artistic legacy also continues to resonate on our stage through performances like Third Coast Percussion and Salar Nader’s 2025 presentation of Murmurs in Time—Hussain’s commission blending Hindustani classical traditions with contemporary percussion.

✨ Join us as we honor the extraordinary life, artistry, and lasting impact of a musician who transformed the global landscape of performance and collaboration.

Learning at the highest level 📈✨🎶

On April 10, the Schwartz Center came alive with two unforgettable master classes led by the incredible Catalyst Quartet, Spencer Myer and J'Nai Bridges, Mezzo-Soprano.

From refining technique to elevating artistry, Emory students had the opportunity to level up—learning directly from world-class performers in real time.

🎻 With Catalyst Quartet, students dove into Dvořák's Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, Op. 81 (I. Allegro ma non tanto): Brandon Lee & Isabella Lin (violins), Elliot Seok (viola), Jayden Lee (cello), and Ryan Han (piano)

🎤 In J’Nai Bridges’ master class, students explored arias and selections from Don Giovanni:
Deven Allen, Tori Mooney, & Ashwini Narayanan

This is what it looks like to level up.
