🚨 3 REASONS YOUR MUSIC ISN’T GROWING — EVEN IF IT’S GOOD
1. YOU’RE ONLY PROMOTING AFTER YOU DROP.
One of the biggest mistakes independent artists make is waiting until release day to start telling people about their music. By then, you’re already playing catch-up. Your audience should know something is coming before the song is available. Start introducing the record weeks ahead of the release through snippets, studio footage, behind-the-scenes content, cover art reveals, pre-save campaigns, storytelling, and short-form videos using the song.
Think about your release like an event. The goal is to build enough curiosity that when the song finally drops, people are already waiting to hear it. And don’t stop promoting it after the first week. One song can provide weeks—or even months—of content when you approach it creatively.
2. YOU’RE MARKETING TO EVERYBODY.
Your target audience can’t just be “people who like music.” The more specifically you understand your potential fans, the easier it becomes to figure out where to find them and what type of content will connect with them.
Ask yourself: What established artists would my ideal listener already have in their playlist? What age range am I targeting? Where do they live? What platforms are they using? What type of content are they engaging with?
That information should influence everything from your social media content and visuals to your advertising, playlist pitching, press strategy, collaborations, performances, and even which DJs or influencers you approach. You don’t need everybody to become a fan. You need to consistently reach the right people and give them enough reasons to become invested in you.
3. YOU DISAPPEAR BETWEEN RELEASES.
If the only time people hear from you is when you have something to promote, you’re making it extremely difficult to build a real fanbase. Your career doesn’t stop when your release campaign ends.
Stay visible. Create content. Network. Perform. Pitch yourself to blogs and media outlets. Build relationships with DJs and other artists. Continue circulating older records. Show your personality. Give your followers a reason to become interested in you, not just one song.
