Guys! We are SO STOKED!!!!

A new pinball machine will be rocking you like a hurricane in our Pinball Alley within the next day or two! It's none other than the Seminole Williams wide-body Superpin Star Trek: The Next Generation!

Even if you've never seen a single episode of Star Trek in your life, we are pretty darn sure that you're going to love this pinball machine! It has a ton of really cool modes and missions, but most importantly, it has one of our favorite mechs in all of pinball: Pinball-shooting photon cannons!

Designed by the legendary Steve Ritchie, the master of flow, this game is so joy-inducing we could almost hurl!

BUT HERE IS THE THING:

The only real flaw of the game was, arguably, the art used for the backglass. For such a dynamic and exciting game, the static roster of softly rendered faces on the translite seems sharply at odds with the exciting dynamism on offer under the glass.

When we picked up this pin, it came with an alternate, aftermarket translate, featuring the Enterprise poised to enter warp speed seven and burst out of the backglass.

Look, we want to be straight with you, we prefer the alternate back class, even if it is technically anachronistic to the original factory condition of this wonderful superpin.

But we're super curious to hear what your preference is, so let's vote on it!
The original translite should be used

Hey, you remember the monoculture???

Back then, commercial taglines and sitcom catchphrases were the lingua franca of hegemonic culture, and real heads knew that the only cool way to invoke such materials was with a sarcastic wink and an ironic twist.

TO INVOKE EARNESTLY WAS TO LOOK A FOOL!!!!

So what, then, were such hepcats to do when The Simpsons rocketed to the apex of America's collective consciousness in the late 80s and early 90s?

For if The Simpsons were a brand built on subversion of the status quo, was it therefore safe to consume them straightly? And was it then the case that to enjoy The Simpsons was to tacitly endorse the very materials of capitalist ideological oppression that they so skewered?

FRAUGHT QUESTIONS, WITHOUT CLEAR ANSWERS!!!

We here at the Star Chamber are very pleased to announce that you can now meditate on such questions while playing the 1991 Konami hit arcade game, "The Simpsons"!!!

Grin or grimace, whichever you prefer, as Bart Simpson tells you to "go to hell" and "eat his shorts" while pummeling villains with his skateboard.

THIS IS A RICHLY POLYSEMIC TEXT, OPEN TO MANY VALENCES OF LUDIC ENGAGEMENT!!!

ITALIAN PLUMBERS PUMMELING TERRAPINS!!!

A SUREFIRE FORMULA FOR ARCADE SUCCESS!!!!

While Mario first appeared in the 1981 arcade smash hit "Donkey Kong," that was not *his* story, that was the story of his disobedient pet gorilla's wild kidnapping shenanigans.

The world would have to wait two EXCRUCIATINGLY long years before it would be allowed to learn more about Mario's world--his profession, his family, his daily struggles.

And as it turns out, those details are incredibly bizarre. Mario works as a plumber alongside his brother Luigi, and their workdays are a nightmarish hellscape of green pipes promulgating killer turtles and weird fireballs.

Mario's existence is bleak, a constant battle for survival against unceasing waves of terrible tortoises. And it is in Mario's Sysyphean purgatory that millions of gamers worldwide found echoes of their own endless daily struggles. MARIO'S PLIGHT IS THAT OF THE DAMNATION OF EXISTENCE ITSELF.

And so, in "Mario Bros", we see one of the most popular, persisting, and profitable corporate mascots ever created take full flower. And now, as of right now, THE STAR CHAMBER HAS MARIO BROS!!!!

Come contemplate Nietzsche's notion of the impossible futility of eternal return, with Mario and Luigi!

It's the best day of the year! The day when a giant effigy of the villain from Nightmare Before Christmas is paraded down Court Street and then parked in front of the Armory and all the children of the city are allowed to climb into its mouth and pluck candy from its innards.

IT'S OOGIE BOOGIE ON THE BRICKS TODAY!!!!!!

DUDES!!!!! Have you been outside? It's AWFUL. Feels like Zeus' armpit out there! (That's a saying, right?
It's not?!?! Well, it should be; I imagine that Greek God had really sweaty, hot, humid armpits that would be absolutely awful to get stuck in).

We keep it cool here at the arcade--69°, baby! And with a fresh furnace filter every week, not only is the air cold, it's crisp, and fresh!

Come join us Wednesday June 10th at 6:30 pm for our next event in the Summer Slam Tournament Series, Pinbowling!

Pinbowling is a Pinball tournament format that follows the scoring rules of Bowling. Each Frame is a game on a specific machine, like the new Cactus Canyon machine. That machine will have a points goal, such as 1 Million points. If you score that many points on ball one, its a strike. If you reach that score on ball 2, that's a spare. Otherwise, your score is based on how close you got to the goal. The third ball is not played in this format.

In the above example with a goal of 1 million points, if you scored 740k, that's 74% of the goal, so the score is 7. If you scored 570k, that would be 57%, and a score of 5. As in Bowling, if you get a spare, your score on that frame is 10 + the result of your first ball on the next frame. A Strike is worth 10 points + the results of the next two balls. Bowling scoring is complicated, but the software does most of the work for us.

We'll play 8 frames in groups, so it's a great opportunity to grab some drinks and ice cream and socialize.

Costs:
Tournament Fee: $10. All of this goes to the cash prize pool. Please bring cash for the tournament fee (laws are weird)
Venue Entry Fee: $10. Star Chamber arcade has a flat $10 entry fee for tournament participants from the start of registration (6:00 pm) until the end of the tournament. All machines are set to free play, no quarters necessary.

- First place: 60% of prize pool
- Second place: 30% of prize pool
- Third place: 10% of prize pool
Total prize pool is number of participants * $10

Registration and reduced entry fee begin at 6:00 pm and closes at 6:30, with the tournament starting shortly after.

As Frederic Jameson wrote in his opus "Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism," the 1950s remain "the privileged lost object of desire."

Writing from his vantage of the 1980s, Jameson argued that the 1950s held an outsized gravity in the cultural teleology of the second half of the 20th century: Exultant Innocence, earnest optimism, rapid scientific advancement, and the proliferation of mass culture coalesced to create a post-war/pre-Kennedy assassination era of unbridled and un-self-reflexive growth and upward achievement.

The 1980s' invocation of the 1950s was not one of deeply nuanced historiographic exhumation, but rather, a superficial recapitulation of signs and signifiers sundered from their original context, a pastiche of outward elements presented in lieu of a deeper understanding or interrogation of the real material conditions and physiological contradictions of the Eisenhower decade.

It's fun to imagine that Jameson was driven to write his entire treatise in one long feverish delirium after playing the 1989 Atari cult classic "Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters" at his local arcade.

The game shamelessly rips various visual, thematic, and auditory elements from 1950 Sci-Fi B movies to create a whirling dervish of crazy-fun arcade gameplay. Featuring unique Hall-effect joysticks and a supercool variegated marquee, the game is absolutely and wonderfully singular both in its presentation and its isomorphic gameplay.

Even cooler? The fact that Atari primarily release this as a conversion kit for arcade operators to use to replace underperforming games in existing cabinets. The only made 371 dedicated cabinets for "Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters," and we have #294!!!! It's a rare and unique piece of arcade history, beyond the one that we're super happy and excited and proud to be able to share with you!

Come game!
