Tip: Large sawtooth hangers work well to hang the 2' x 2' size BQ's. I provide one and can help you hang it. You get the hard part - choosing a pattern & colors!

A Different Twist on Quilting

A friend invited me to join her in attending a Barn Quilt Class on September 11, 2017. I had previously attended a presentation about Barn Quilts at Pioneer Bluffs, so I was vaguely familiar with the concept. We talked about which pattern we might like to try, looked at lots of quilt pattern books, and planned to ride to the class together.

The class exceeded my expectations. There were several instructors, plenty of space, options for creativity, and all the tools and equipment needed were provided. The organizer did a great job. I was impressed with the class.

I forgot how exciting it is to try something new especially in a room full of new people. I worked on my project all day at the class, drove us home, and I STILL wasn’t ready to stop. So I started working on the reverse side thinking maybe I’d hang it vertically like a sign instead of hanging it on a wall. Eventually I was too tired to continue, but I was hooked. I’d found my new hobby.

The good thing I discovered was that it didn’t replace my fabric quilting hobby as I think I feared it would. In fact, trying my hand at painting quilt patterns only enhanced and expanded my interest in quilting. It is art that suits me just right - the creativity is mostly with color and patterns neither of which intimidate me as the idea of more freehand style art has in the past. I like the precision and reliability of measuring and following a pattern. I like feeling like I have some talent in working with color combinations, a compliment I once received when working with fabrics.
