The members of the Ophelia Theatre Group share this letter because we have supported white fragility and white supremacy in theatre. We have been seen doing so by the community of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) theatre makers, and we see ourselves and our actions in this letter. We share this to amplify voices of BIPOC artists and administrators in our field, and to hold ourselves accountable for our actions.
As a company looking to further change, and to diversify through the communal sharing of theatre, we cannot do that without acknowledging the extreme luxury we have had in our predominantly white board and patrons. We fully realize that we have had that privilege, and we owe it to the diverse artists we aim to work with by honoring that admission and using it to move forward in selection of material, casting decisions, and beyond.
We have been seen, and we are standing with BIPOC theatre makers in demanding change. Please sign to add your voice.
