I ran into Nike by chance at Art Basel Miami , which was such a nice surprise. We first met in South Hampton, NY, at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair , where we both exhibited. It was great to see her showing her work and to catch up for a bit.
Nike Davies-Okundaye (Nigeria) is a textile artist and master of adire, recognized for preserving and revitalizing Yoruba artisanal traditions. She grew up surrounded by threads, music, and indigo, learning weaving, adire eleko, and batik from a young age under the guidance of her great-grandmother, a talented craftswoman.
Her childhood in Osogbo —a cultural heart of Nigeria— nurtured the sensitivity that characterizes her work, where ancestral patterns, mythology, personal memory, and reflections on the female experience intertwine.
Today, her work is part of prestigious collections such as the Smithsonian Museum, the Gallery of African Art, and the British Library, establishing her as one of the essential voices of contemporary African textile art❤️.
