THIS WEEKEND: Join E L I S E W A G N E R at PIER 11 STUDIO for a demonstration of wax collagraph printmaking using Print Wax. Occurring during Astoria Open Studio Tours Astoria Open Studios Tour, there will be two demos taking place:

The first will occur on Saturday the 25th at 2 pm, and will demonstrate building a wax collagraph plate using her product Wagner Collagraph Wax.

On Sunday the 26th at 2 pm, the second demonstration will show the printing process. Come by and learn about wax collagraph printmaking, including information about Wagner Collagraph Wax, Elise’s favorite tools, materials, and techniques!

Printing large wax collagraphs using 18” x 36” Claybord as the printing plate…who knew it was “printmaking adjacent?!”

One of the things I love most about wax collagraph printmaking is its endless capacity for discovery. Every texture has the potential to become part of the final image.

For this plate, I’m embedding textiles into PrintWax to build layers of pattern and relief. As the Akua Inks moves across the surface, each fabric reveals its own distinctive character, creating details that are both intentional and unexpected.

While I often work on plexiglass, this time I’m experimenting with Ampersand Claybord as an alternative plate surface. Its absorbent clay ground gives the wax excellent tooth and opens up new possibilities for mark-making.

I was especially excited to print these impressions on hand-dyed Hanji papers from The Paper Connection. Their subtle color variations become part of the composition, adding warmth, depth, and making every print truly one of a kind.

Experimentation has always been at the heart of my practice. Every plate is a conversation between texture, wax, ink, paper, pressure, and intuition. That’s the magic of printmaking—each pull from the press brings the possibility of surprise.
