Mother of Sorrows by Eleanor Day, part of our American Reflections exhibit in our gallery this month. Story behind this painting from the artist ““I painted this version of an iconic Catholic image of Mary, mother of Jesus, who typically hold the objects of her son’s suffering, while her “”sacred heart”” is pierced by the “” seven swords of sorrow””, and her eyes are filled with grief. Currently in America, so many mothers (parents) hearts are being broken by the prevalence of our children’s suffering and deaths from drug addiction and gun violence. My version of Mary holds the modern sources of these objects that are destroying our families.
On a personal note, at the time, my own child, a young adult, had become one of these victims to drug addiction, and my sense of sorrow and helplessness brought this familiar image of Catholicism to mind, having been raised Catholic as a child, and strongly influenced by the visual images of the church atmosphere. In this way, I was able to connect my sense of compassion for all the Mothers of Sorrow trying to raise children in a country that doesn’t prioritize addressing these, along with so many other issues that put our families in danger.
The atmosphere in the background reflects our lack of green spaces and unhealthy air in Urban areas, especially in the recent years of wildfires that are a result of insufficient attention to climate change and how it is affecting all life.” America250PADelco Delco Arts
