It’s the 38th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. 2, which inspired me to make a Mario 2 dress! 🍄❤️
Released in North America in October 1988, Super Mario Bros. 2 has a fascinating history! The game was adapted from the 1987 Famicom Disk System title Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, with Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad replacing its four playable characters. Japan had already received a different Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1986, but its punishing difficulty made it a less appealing choice for American audiences. That version eventually reached North America as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in the 1993 SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars.
The very first issue of Nintendo Power, released in July 1988, featured Mario and Wart as clay figures on its iconic cover, along with a massive 20-page feature introducing the upcoming game! Readers learned about the four playable characters and their unique abilities, techniques like the Power Squat Jump, and the many enemies and items they’d encounter. The magazine also revealed hidden items, secret rooms, shortcuts, and strategies for defeating bosses like Birdo and Tryclyde. What an incredible introduction for Nintendo Power!
I absolutely loved playing SMB2 as a kid, often with neighborhood friends, and I almost always chose Princess Toadstool (Peach)! Her ability to float made her my favorite, and I loved finally getting to play as the princess instead of rescuing her. ❤️
I was also a huge fan of the 1989 Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, and seeing so many familiar SMB2 characters, enemies, and settings brought to life in the cartoon was amazing! Princess Toadstool was my favorite character on the show, too.
Super Mario Bros. 2 was such a memorable departure from the original, with its dreamlike world, vegetable-throwing, and four distinct playable characters. Even though it began as another game entirely, it left a lasting mark on the Mario franchise!
Happy 38th anniversary to this wonderfully weird NES classic! I loved this game so much as a kid that 38 years later, I've apparently decided to become the box art. 🤭🍄❤
