ROGUE POETRY SLAM

ROGUE POETRY SLAM Rogue Valley's place for poets to compete in a three round competition - watch for dates. Cash prizes

A Poetry Slam is the literary and public expression of personal and political to the community. It's comprised of wordsmiths performing their art to an audience willing to hear and be changed. We also need a few judgey onlookers to cull the artists down to one ultimate winner. The rules are listed under a pinned post at the top of the page.

Oh, Poetry Friends - I have been so out of it and I apologize. With the closing of The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant and my own busyness building a business this year, I am very behind in getting word out to you about upcoming events.

The Medford Library Reached out to Blaine Alexander Lindsey and I to help them host a monthly Poetry Open Mic. I imagine this being a new starting place for us as we regroup and grow moving forward.

It's late notice, but this will be happening every month. Let's support our local community. This could be great for people who don't feel ready to compete in a SLAM but want to gain experience sharing their work in front of an audience.

I will be there with bells on, and some new poems - I hope you can join me in this new partnership.

Sincerely, Your Slightly Frazzled Slam Master, Liesl Garner

Join us at the Medford Library every third Tuesday for an evening of poetry and community! All are welcome to share their original poetry or be part of a supportive audience....

GUEST HOST NEEDED FOR APRIL!!

Barnes & Noble has graciously invited us to do a monthly poetry gathering on the Third Saturday of every month.

This month I cannot be there - is there someone who has been involved with the Slam for a bit who could guest host this?

It's 12:30 - 2:00

If you reach out to me - I can give you details. It's pretty simple.

It's not a Slam or a Competition - it's a gathering. It's a great place to meet people who might be interested in a slam if they felt comfortable reading in front of a smaller group.

APRIL SLAM RESULTS!

Honestly - this was one of the Best Slams Ever! We had brand new people showing up and Killing it!

One of our new poets, Megan Lebov, was the very first name to be pulled out of the hat. She shared that she'd never done anything like this before. She proceeded to perform one of the most Pure Slam Strategy for Winning types of poems I've ever heard. The crowd went WILD! We couldn't stop screaming and cheering for her!

Here are all the poets who performed:

Megan Lebov
Mori D
Annique Maujean
Lois Lynn
Raleigh Crippen
Madeleine Sklar
Marie DeGregorio (who has volunteered to be our new Admin - Whoohoo)
Aubrey Laughlin
Jack Seybold
Jill Rothman
Josh
Many Yana Campos
Ruth Wire
Hakiym the Sufi

There were chills all night long. We were blown away by the depth of passion, the pathos, and even the humor. Of course there were steamy poems - there always are - and this month did not disappoint. Hakiym - also brand new to us - walked away from the mic to move and practically caress us with his words. And, yes, he brought the STEAM! Wowza!

Okay - so - YOUR WINNERS:

In 4th place, getting her door money back - Megan Lebov. Please come back. We all loved you so much!

In 3rd place - Josh Gross - he's said it before - he was hoping someone would beat him. He's been almost unbeatable for a long time. He definitely brought his indomitable spirit and wordplay, as always. Thank you, Josh, for your work. You elevate our entire group and make people work harder on their delivery!

In 2nd place - Hakiym Sha'ir HAKIYM THE SUFI - Brand new to us - Rocked it - Smoked it - Sang it in a voice that made the floor boards creak. Honest to goodness. Seriously, Wow! He just moved here from another area where he was active in Slams and asked if we are competing in Nationals. We have never really worked toward that - but with his help, I think we could. It was a dream of T Poe's, who started our SLAM. Let's do this!

In 1st place - MANYA YANA CAMPOS - with her swagger and grace and sweet, sweet, spiritual, reverent, indigenous honoring words. She lights up the stage every time she walks up there! Thank you for everything you do!

We had a small but mighty group today.

I met someone new who shared his poetry. He’s not really into competing, so probably won’t SLAM with us.

We got to talking, and if we’re doing a SLAM quarterly in Ashland, on the other two months of that quarter we could do one month in Medford and one in Grants Pass.

We could start with readings like the one at Barnes & Noble and keep it low-key. See if anyone wants to build it into a SLAM.

We’ll be working on some details.

Oh - and I’ll be working on a piece of art inspired by the opening lines of his poem. I can’t wait to share that. Oh my word - CHILLS!!

Seriously need help with running Rogue Poetry Slam - or get input from you all about whether the extra things I wanted to put in motion are necessary at this time.

I'm starting a new career and then my computer crashed and I had to wait for a new one. Then I had vertigo for most of the week. Oh - and I was locked out of my Canva account for two months - the design software I use.

Here it is - the day before our Barnes & Noble Monthly Poetry deal, and I've sent out no promotional work at all.

So - if we want the extras on top of our Quarterly Slams - I need a little circle of people to help with getting the word out.

Moving forward, with collecting winner's information, I have some technology I'm using in my work that will make it much easier to connect - I can just text people instead of trying to figure out who's on Instagram and who's on Facebook, and who doesn't like social media.

Anyone want to partner with me?

Should we still do the Barnes & Noble tomorrow - Saturday from 12:30 to 2:00? We only had one winner show up last time. I'm thinking I might be asking too much of our winners.

What do you think?

The JANUARY SLAM RESULTS!!

We had another fabulous night at The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant last Sunday.

It is exciting to see our poets bringing their entourages! Several poets are bringing enough friends to fill long tables or two tables put together. Way to rally your raving fans!!

Again, we had some new voices. It takes courage to stand up in front of strangers and share your heart. We so appreciate it! The first night competing may not land you in the top four, but keep coming back. You’ll get your footing and figure out how to play to the crowd in no time. We can’t wait to see you in the spotlight winning the big bucks.

And, believe it or not, Josh (who takes first place regularly) has told me he would love to have someone beat him. Bring it!!!

Okay, the results:

In FOURTH Place (lower right) and getting her door money back - MADELEINE SKLAR - One of your poems literally floored me. It took a minute before I could stand up and get back to the mic. WOW!

In THIRD place (lower left) - First time to our Slam - way to go!! - and taking home $78 - MORI D SAMEL-GURLOFF. So powerful. We can’t wait to hear more from you.

In SECOND Place (top right) - ALAN - taking $117 prize money - Can you believe he’s new to writing poetry? He makes it look so easy. Always love your work!

And in FIRST Place (top left) - our current, indisputable front runner, always a crowd favorite - JOSH GROSS - with the top dollar prize of $195! Josh has taught a workshop for us on Slam Poetry. I took notes because he is so talented and knows how to rock that first place win nearly every time.

Kudos to you all.

Thank you to everyone who came out either as audience members, or judges - we couldn’t do this without you - and every single poet who stepped foot on our stage. You were all AMAZING!

So sorry for the delay in putting out the Slam Results! You guys deserve better.

We came down with a horrible flu - my son came to visit Sunday night, so I wasn’t exposed until after the Slam. But we’ve been down for the count and I’m also trying to get through studying some intense stuff for a State Exam.

I will try to get this out by Sunday! You all rocked. Thank you for your grace and patience with me.

~ Liesl Garner, your Slam Master

Our Story

A brief description of what is expected of Slam Poets and Judges: RULES FOR SLAM POETS Poems can be on any subject and in any style. Each poem must be an original piece performed by the author. No props. No costumes. Performances are timed and should not exceed 3 minutes. There will be a 10 sec. grace period beyond the 3 min. time limit. A .5 penalty will be assessed for every 10 sec. over 3min 10 sec. Timing starts when the performance or sound begins. No musical instruments or prerecorded music. Each poem may only be used once during the quarter, March, April and May. RULES FOR SLAM JUDGES Judges are selected at random from the audience (no experience needed) Five judges are used and each is asked to leave their personal bias at home. Scores are from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest), using any decimal point (.2, .6, .8 etc.) to reduce the chance of ties. Judges are asked to rate on performance or presentation of the poem and on the content of the poem (was it well-written, did it make sense - doesn't matter if you agreed with the content). At the same time, judges hold up one score when asked by the Slam Master The high and low scores are discarded and the three remaining scores are added together to give the poet a single score for the poem. The S.M. will then announce the poet's scores for the round out loud. Any dispute will be settled at the discretion of the Slam Master. This is a 3 round competition. At the end of Round #1 the scores will be compared and approx. 50% of Poets will continue to Round #2. Round #2 will mirror the first. Poets will present, be judged and some will move into Round #3 where 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Poets will share the wealth of the Door pot.
