This storm over Ashland was captured by drone by Chris Mazzella on Friday, July 17.

What you are looking at is a shelf cloud, the leading edge of a severe thunderstorm rolling across Chequamegon Bay. That low, layered wall of cloud forms where cold air rushing out ahead of the storm plows under the warm humid air near the surface. When you see one this defined, powerful straight line winds are usually right behind it.

They were. This is the same storm that tore roofs off buildings in Ashland and shut down Bay Days for the evening. The green tint in the sky is another warning sign, light filtering through a core of heavy rain and hail.

One of the most impressive storm structures Chequamegon Bay has seen in years, captured perfectly from above.
