Today Raul started this piece that is in reference to “Rage against the machine’s” 2017 album that featured on the cover a photo of the 73 year old Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thick Quang Duc committing self-immolation…as he set himself ablaze at a busy intersection in Saigon to protest the South Vietnamese government’s persecution of Buddhist. There was civilian upheaval against the predominantly Catholic government of president Ngo Dinh Diem, which was supported by the United States. Although the Buddhist constituted a majority of the Vietnamese, Catholics enjoyed special privileges under Diem’s regime. The photo was taken by Malcolm W. Brown on June 11 1963, he was born in New York, he had started his journalistic career when he was drafted during the Korean War and later to Vietnam. He was awarded The World Press Photo of the Year.
