Salt Creek Song Festival started with a simple idea: bring incredible musicians together to create something rooted in community. Gretchen co-founded that vision and also has helped guide it as Secretary of our Board of Directors.

As she steps down from the board, we're so grateful for everything she's built with us. Gretchen, thank you for the years of heart, artistry, and leadership! 🎶

The board may look a little different, but the heart of SCSF – community, connection, and beautiful music – stays exactly the same.

☀️🎶 That’s a wrap on our first ever Summer Composer Residency! Huge thanks to Barry Sharp for spending the week with us at Salt Creek.

“road mountaintop air” is officially taking shape, and we can’t wait for you all to hear it at the 2027 Festival!

This week, we’re thrilled to welcome Philadelphia-based composer and musician Barry Sharp to SCSF for our first ever Summer Composer Residency! ☀️
 Barry joins us straight from Spain, fresh off the 2026 Valencia International Performing Arts Summer Festival, where he composed a new piece for the renowned Mivos Quartet.
 We can’t wait to spend this week working alongside Barry as he develops “road mountaintop air,” an exciting new piece set to be presented as part of our 2027 Festival. More details on that coming soon. 
This residency continues our passion for commissioning new work and investing in the voices shaping the future of vocal music, adding to the canon of art song one piece at a time.

Mark your calendars for the 2027 Salt Creek Song Festival: BIRDS OF A FEATHER, coming to Ashland, Nebraska May 23-29, 2027.

We're already looking forward to another week of extraordinary art song, meaningful connection, and unforgettable performances shared in community. Save the date and stay tuned. We’ll have much more to share about our sixth season in the months ahead.

And just like that, festival week is here!

Join us as we kick of our fifth season Sunday at 4 PM with an incredible performance by and of “My Antonia” by and the world premiere of “I was something that lay under the sun” by at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

A little note from Jared:

As Salt Creek Song Festival heads into its fifth season I have been reflecting with gratitude on the past five years of producing this festival with Gretchen. The passionate, warm, and inclusive spaces that we’ve curated together to share art song with the Ashland community has been deeply memorable and at times, even cathartic. When I try to pinpoint the festival moments I’ve valued most I find myself drawn to something Hubert Creekmore wrote about poet Langston Hughes Fields of Wonder–that their value was rooted in “a sudden, sensitive gasp of feeling,” direct and honest.

At a time when much about life feels topsy turvy I think we have a duty to sink deep into these moments of feeling. Our fifth season, Fields of Wonder, is designed to embrace the expansiveness of wonder as we grapple with both the joys and sorrows of life together; to embrace and invest in an ever expanding future full of diverse voices coming together in song, direct and honest. Can’t wait to see you all May 17!
