I am so drawn to large, billowy summer clouds. They start as something soft and light and can turn menacing and dark quickly. It’s the thrill of hiking on bald mountains in July.

When I paint a scene, I don’t like to be so fussy about it that it looks like a photograph. That’s what cameras are for! My intention is to evoke a feeling based on the subject, using paint application, color, and mark making. This scene of a waterfall is all about the force and drama of the water over the rocks.

I laid the paint on thick in this depiction of a waterfall west of Sam K**b off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I like the look of minimum strokes to convey a landscape. It’s not just executing a copy of a photo, but bringing forth the emotional essence of the scene through color, paint application and mark-making. This is 16x20 oil on canvas.
