Tangent Scale Models Unparalleled scale replicas for discriminating railroad modelers

www.tangentscalemodels.com Thank you for visiting Tangent Scale Models!

Since 2007, we have created an innovative product line that provides the next generation of HO scale railroad freight car models, covering all eras from 1917 to the present. While other brands are good at producing locomotives – both steam and diesel – we believe “it’s time to pay attention to the train.” This means your freight cars! We believe freight cars are equally important to your locomotiv

es, and anyone who already has our cars will tell you that our passion for cars shows with every car and paint scheme replica we produce. Simply put, we offer a balanced and growing product line of high-quality, well-researched, and smartly-executed freight cars that you can always count on to fill needed gaps in your fleet, as well as replace outdated models. When we announce a car, it is for sale immediately. We do not pre-announce our products or have cutesy blogs. We are serious about producing unmatched models.

Asheville, North Carolina: Tangent Scale Models today is releasing our next all-new HO scale freight car, the North American Car Corporation (NACC) 1963-design 33,000 Gallon Dual Diameter Flammable Gas Tank Car, Class ICC-112A-340-W. This gorgeous prototype tank car model has never been available in either brass or plastic, and is applicable to modelers from the 1960s to the 2000s. We are excited to bring you this highly relevant – and needed – tank car model in HO Scale.

You’ve been asking for 1960s tank cars. Here they are (and it is our second all-new 1960s tank car released in 2026!). No preorders. No waiting. These cars are available right now. Oh - and don’t forget to enjoy one of the first North American Car Corporation tank car models ever made in the history of HO!

North American Car Corporation (NACC) produced this 33,000 Gallon Non-Insulated tank car design between 1963-1965. These non-insulated “pressure tank cars” were designed to haul a large payload of Liquified Petroleum Gas or Anhydrous Ammonia. Because these cars had two distinct tank diameters, they were called “Dual Diameter” cars. At the top of the car is a large “Manway Nozzle” for gas loading and unloading. These cars are notable because of the handrails that extend across the entire tank from the ends. All of these features fit within a Plate B clearance envelope, typical of cars from this build era. During the 1977-1980 period, U.S. DOT mandated these cars be retrofitted to include head shields (or an insulated jacket which changed the appearance of the car) to protect the tank head.

The Tangent Scale Models North American Car Corporation (NACC) 1963-design 33,000 Gallon Dual Diameter Flammable Gas Tank Car is a dimensionally-accurate replica that adds great visual variety to your tank car fleet. Our model includes key build variations, notably cars with and without anti-personnel bars, as well as head shields for appropriate paint schemes. This replica includes our “near-scale” draft gear box including side “key” detail. Our ready-to-operate replica is finished with coupler lift bars accompanying Kadee® scale head couplers (appropriate schemes with shelf couplers), sufficient hidden weights, and CNC-machined wheels to ensure the model operates as well as it looks.

Our May 2026 release of the HO NACC 1963-design 33,000 Gallon Dual Diameter Flammable Gas Tank Car includes five railroad schemes, plus one unlettered “but painted white” option.

- NATX "White Lease Delivery 1963" introduces our NATX “plain white lease” paint scheme as applied to the tank car when built in 1963. While we call it a lease scheme, it is actually a “two tone” – white on top and black on the bottom of the tank body and on the end frames. These cars feature the Roman-style stenciling in white, which certainly “pops” against the white-painted carbody. Prominently displayed on this car: the classy “North American” parallelogram logo. Among many small stencils, the words “Liquified Petroleum Gas Only” is stenciled on the right side, confirming its service use, as well as a myriad of other accurate stenciling. And like most non-billboard lessee stenciled tank cars, these cars state their lessee in a very small stencil on the car, including the words “Leased to Shell Oil Co.” These tank cars roll on Tangent 100-ton Barber S-2 trucks with 36’ wheels, separate truck brake beams and rotating Timken roller bearing caps. These cars are available with 4 road numbers, perfect for filling out your era-specific trains. SKU 31160

- NCTX "Pacific 66 Calgary AB 1964" shows a classy white paint scheme with the classic “Pacific 66” and the words “LP Gas” prominently advertising – in large red and black stenciling - what these cars were designed to transport. In the center of the car, the black painted stenciling says “Pacific Petroleums Ltd. Calgary Alberta Lessee.” These cars feature the Roman-style NCTX reporting mark stenciling in black, which certainly “pops” against the white-painted carbody. The NCTX reporting mark was use for North American’s Canadian operations, and stands for North American Tank Car (Canada) Ltd. These cars have black anti-personnel bars along the carbody, to give another cool detail seen on some of these cars. This Tangent model offering screams “Canada!” Finally, a Canadian tank car for the pivotal 1960s-1990s period! See our 1979+ version of this paint livery to see these cars in their later lives. These tank cars roll on Tangent 100-ton Barber S-2 trucks with 36’ wheels, separate truck brake beams and rotating Timken roller bearing caps. These cars are available with 3 road numbers, perfect for filling out your location-specific trains. SKU 31161

- NATX "Murphy SPUR Delivery 1965" gives modelers an example of a very popular billboard paint scheme car. These “Murphy Corporation Lessee” cars have silver-painted tanks, with black end frames. Painted on the silver body is a proud “SPUR” logo on the side of the car. The SPUR lettering inside the logo and on the sides and ends of the tank is dark blue. The logo’s blue letter stenciling contrasts nicely against a white background, and on the right of the logo is the star that is seemingly found on all Murphy branding. This 1965 paint job screams 1960s and 1970s, and we are excited to offer it today! Among many small stencils, the words “Liquified Petroleum Gas Only” are stenciled on the right side, denoting the service for these cars. These tank cars roll on Tangent 100-ton Barber S-2 trucks with 36’ wheels, separate truck brake beams and rotating Timken roller bearing caps. These cars are available in 6 numbers, and are stunners. Silver “SPUR” tank cars were seen everywhere in North America in the 1960s/1970s period! SKU 31162

- NCTX "Pacific 66 Calgary AB" 1979+ is a modernized version of the Pacific 66 car from 1964, which we also offer. This model includes a classy weathered white paint carbody, with the classic “Pacific 66.” The carbody includes the large words “LP Gas” prominently advertising – in large red and black stenciling - what these cars were designed to transport. For the 1979+ version of this paint scheme, we have replicated the varying paintouts on the right side of the car. It also includes a fresh “Anhydrous Ammonia” stencil on the right side, as shown on the prototype photo we have worked from for this scheme, and is prominently referenced on our website. These cars have black anti-personnel bars along the carbody, to provide another cool detail. Also, these models have head shields installed on the car ends, which were mandated as a safety enhancement based upon a series of US Department of Transportation rules published in 1977 and generally executed in the 1978-1980 period. At that same time, DOT also mandated the retrofit of shelf couplers, and of course we have included genuine Kadee® scale shelf couplers on our tank car models! These tank cars roll on Tangent 100-ton Barber S-2 trucks with 36’ wheels, separate truck brake beams and rotating Timken roller bearing caps. These cars are available with 3 road numbers, perfect for filling out your location-specific trains. This Tangent model offering screams “Canada!” Finally, a Canadian tank car for the pivotal 1960s-1990s period! See our 1964 version of this paint livery to see these cars in their earlier lives, between 1964 and 1979. SKU 31163

- CITX "White Lease Repaint" 1992+ is our modern paint scheme offering. This car SKU is a “white lease” scheme that was common from that era for LP tanks, which included the yellow “For Product Emergency” box. These cars feature the 1992-era modern-style stenciling in black, which certainly “pops” against the white-painted carbody. Also, the car includes a modern COTS box and “Inhalation Hazard” warning. These cars are available with 4 road numbers, perfect for filling out your era-specific trains. SKU 31164

We are modelers too, and we understand the need to continue to offer undecorated products.
