An Asheville Icon, The Cotton Mill is one of the oldest structures in the River Arts District. Built in 1887, the two-story brick factory produced denim and flannel, and it’s heyday employed over 300 people most of whom lived above this riverfront property in the Chicken Hill neighborhood. The Cotton Mill building survived The Great Flood of 1916, The Great Depression, shut it’s doors in 1953, and

was almost destroyed by fire in 1995. Presently, this turn of the century industrial property of cultural, historic, and architectural significance is at the center of the creative River Arts District. Artist studios, art galleries, and a local music venue now call The Asheville Cotton Mill home.

The newest Cotton Mill Studios artists intend for Ochre Rose and the Asheville Fine Arts Gallery to be a place where visitors can host workshops, classes, and intimate artist and community gatherings and events. They also plan to collaborate with other local artists to curate themed exhibits.

Today feels emotional in the best way.

After everything the River Arts District and our Cotton Mill Studios family went through after the flood, it means a lot to see this story being shared. The rebuild has been filled with hard work, community support, and a whole lot of resilience.

We’re proud of everyone who helped bring life back to the Cotton Mill and grateful to still be part of this incredible community. Bigger things are still ahead. ❤️
