The new chancellor at UNC Asheville has decided to eliminate several programs, including: Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Drama, Philosophy, and Religious Studies — and curtail a fifth: Languages and Literatures.

This is a disturbing trend in our country - we can’t just get by on math and science. The programs above teach so much about humanity, not to mention very important soft skills like empathy, communication and emotional literacy.

The theatre department has started a letter writing campaign. All of the artists and thinkers in our area would really appreciate the support. This campaign is for the theatre program, but I am hoping this will make the Chancellor see all of these programs as vital to student learning and outcomes.
