Masterworks 7: Homeland | Kodály, Wieniawski + Dvořák

Homeland closes our Masterworks season with music rooted in identity, tradition, and the powerful voice of cultural heritage. These works draw deeply from folk rhythms and national spirit, transforming them into orchestral statements that are vibrant, passionate, and impossible to ignore.

Kodály’s Dances of Galánta bursts with Hungarian dance traditions in bold, colorful orchestration. Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring violinist Robert Lakatoš, showcases youthful virtuosity and a fiery Polish finale full of energy and flair. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 brings the journey to a powerful close, channeling Czech pride into one of his most intense and deeply expressive symphonic works.

Masterworks 6: Marquee | Gershwin, Bernstein + Styne

Marquee brings New York City to life, not just as a backdrop, but as a character in its own right. This program captures the pulse of 1930s and ’40s Manhattan: brassy, electric, tender, and constantly in motion.

From Styne’s sparkling Gypsy overture to Gershwin’s rhythmic Concerto in F, featuring pianist Aaron Diehl, the music swings between jazz-infused energy and lyrical reflection. Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town paints a vivid portrait of subway rushes and skyline dreams, while Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess symphonic picture brings the evening home with one of the defining works of American music. Rooted in tradition, storytelling, and the sound of a city that never sleeps.

Masterworks Spotlight!

Masterworks 5: Dedication | Respighi, Glière + Saint-Saëns

Dedication marks a moment of reflection and celebration, honoring milestones of artistry, place, and community. As we recognize the 100th anniversary of First Baptist Church of Asheville, this program brings together works that speak to legacy, reverence, and enduring musical vision.

Respighi’s Gli Uccelli (The Birds) offers a delicate, evocative opening, followed by Glière’s richly expressive Horn Concerto, featuring Jeffrey Whaley. At the heart of the program, Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3, the “Organ,” performed with organist Tate Addis, stands as a monumental testament to creative culmination—music that gathers a lifetime of expression into one towering statement.

With guest artists from our own community, we are proud to share this celebration alongside the musicians who help shape our musical home.
