On this day, Aug. 11, back in 1973, a local DJ called Kool Herc threw a back to school dance party with his friend Coke LaRoc at 1520 Sedgewick Ave. in the Bronx. At this party Herc played old soul, funk, and R&B records, focusing on the breakdown sections and repeating those breaks over and over because he knew the kids loved to dance to it. Meanwhile his friend Coke LaRoc was giving clever shout outs and hyping up the crowd. That night Hip Hop was born. Happy Birthday to Hip Hop!!
