WHEELER WEDNESDAY this month takes us back to 1987 as we head for the infamous Santa Carla boardwalk to STILL BELIEVE, NEVER GROW OLD, and revel in the film that made VAMPIRES cool again: it’s Joel Schumacher’s THE LOST BOYS, and it’s one night only on 6/24 at 9:30 pm.
Exploring themes of queerness through the lens of male heterosexual friendship, THE LOST BOYS feature a who’s who of eighties stars at the height of their stardom: Dianne Wiest (Hannah and Her Sisters), Edward Herrmann (Annie), Alex Winter (Bill and Ted, FREAKED) Corey Haim (License to Drive), Corey Feldman (The Goonies, Friday the 13th Part 4), Jason Patric (RUSH), and the legendary Kiefer Sutherland as the KING OF COOL DAVID THE VAMPIRE.
THE LOST BOYS was shot on location in Santa Cruz, California (the at-the-time murder capital of the US) in June of 1986 and boy howdy is it a genuine time capsule of fashion, music, and life in that defining year (which is when your humble narrator was born fyi). Featuring songs by INXS, Roger Daltry, Echo and the Bunnymen, and SEXY SAX MAN himself Tim Cappello, the soundtrack became a defining cultural artifact and helped lead to the movies smash success. Joel Schumacher, the film’s openly gay director, himself said that “the screenings weren’t average experiences…they were balls-out rock concerts.”
If it’s your first time, welcome to the sexiest and coolest vampire film you’ve ever seen. If it’s not, welcome back to Santa Clara - which would be a nice town if it wasn’t for all the damn vampires. Tickets are on sale now on our website - it’ll be 6/24 at 9:30 pm and feature an introduction and discussion by ‘YOU’RE EATING WORMS, MICHAEL’ WHEELER as he talks 1987, the vampire genre, Schumacher, and why the idea of never growing up is so appealing to the lost males of today. See you then.
