As Charles Eames said, “The details are not the details. They make the design.” True words, and completely applicable to these six artists. Here are just a few of the many details you can be awestruck by in the new Focus Gallery exhibition, “The Details Have It.” Running June 20 - September 6 upstairs at the , these artists have created work that is as intricate and intriguing as it is beautiful. Make sure you take your time and really look at the minute stitches, incredible wood grain, tiny petals, opal flecks, and miniature worlds that make these pieces so special.

Emerging Artist Highlight! Meet Jasmine Steinacker & Anna Rose Garrett

Jasmine Steinacker holds a BFA in Glass Fabrication, Photography + Film from Virginia Commonwealth University and has worked at Pilchuck Glass School and hot shops up and down the East Coast. In 2020, she survived a serious burn accident in the studio but kept working. Her coldworked glass, carved, engraved, and polished, draws on antique industrial objects, Art Deco design, and the coastal landscapes of New Jersey and North Carolina. She writes in her artist statement: “Through her glass art, she embraces the tension of life’s simple joys and impermanence.”

Anna Rose Garrett taught middle and high school art for three years before founding Good Seed Craft Co. in 2021 to focus on linoprint and printmaking. Based in the valley town of Andrews in Western North Carolina, her work centers on community, domesticity, and what she calls “our personal need for a sense of place.” Her prints have been featured in People of Print and The Laurel of Asheville, and she has taught workshops at Olive’s Porch, an extension of John C. Campbell Folk School.

You can meet Jasmine, Anna Rose and the other emerging artists in person at the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands July 16-19 in Downtown Asheville, NC!

About the EAP:
Now in its third edition, the EAP has become a permanent fixture of the Guild's programming, a signal that an organization founded in 1930 is actively cultivating the next generation of fine craft artists.

Selected artists receive, among other benefits, a discounted booth fee for exhibiting at the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands and professional development programming through partnership with Mountain BizWorks’ Craft Your Commerce program.

Participation in the EAP is not the same as Guild membership, which involves a separate and more rigorous jury process. Artists leave the EAP with a working knowledge of Guild culture, professional relationships with established members, and a personal sense of what the SHCG offers it's members.

Emerging Artist Highlight! Toryn Davis Black & Kevin Duckett

After a twenty-year career as a clinical social worker, Toryn Black returned to the Blue Ridge Mountains and retrained in the Professional Crafts Program at Haywood Community College, launching Toryn Black Design in 2025. Working primarily in native Appalachian hardwoods, she crafts mid-century modern-inspired furniture and objects inflected with Art Nouveau curves and what she calls “occult symbolism.” “Reclaiming my creativity has been a liberating return to an essential part of myself that had long been buried — a testament to ongoing becoming.”

Growing up on a working cattle farm in Sandy Mush, NC, Kevin Duckett developed an early appreciation for handcrafted leather goods. He works in the Sheridan style, a tradition of flowing floral carving producing wallets, belts, guitar straps, and custom pieces designed to withstand a lifetime of use. “Each piece is designed with close attention to the flow of the vines and flowers, ensuring that the final product is elegant and realistic. My products are influenced by nature and necessity, and crafted for function and fashion.”

You can meet Toryn, Kevin and the other emerging artists in person at the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands July 16-19 in Downtown Asheville, NC!

NEXT MONTH: Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands
July 16–19, 2026 • Asheville, NC

Explore fine contemporary and traditional craft from more than 100 juried artists from across the Southern Appalachian region. Meet the makers, watch live demonstrations, and discover handmade work in pottery, wood, fiber, jewelry, glass, metal, and more.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual will return to the Craft Fair. Founded in 1946, Qualla is the oldest Native American cooperative in the United States and has long been central to preserving the artistic traditions of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians: basketry, pottery, woodcarving, beadwork, and other traditional crafts that predate the Guild itself by centuries.

This year's fair will also spotlight the Guild's Emerging Artist Program. Ten early-career makers — selected from a competitive pool of applicants across the Guild's nine-state region and representing six craft media — will exhibit alongside established Guild members for the first time.

Emerging Artist Highlight! Meet Amy Burka, & Emiko Kuhs

Amy Burka .amy.hey spent years in other professional careers before replacing the laptop on her desk with a sewing machine in 2023. Working exclusively in canvas and waxed canvas from her home studio, she designs and produces bags and accessories built for longevity. Her practice is grounded in a conviction that handwork carries ethical weight: “Almost everything is made by someone’s hands — and knowing what skills, effort, and resources are required demands respect for craft and craftspeople of all kind.”

Emiko Kuhs .444 is a trans quilter and Georgia State University BFA graduate whose work examines two interlocking forms of power: the fragility of Appalachia’s electrical grid under pressure from data center expansion, and the experience of being transgender. Working in a medium with deep roots in community and protest, Kuhs uses historic quilting techniques, symbols, fabric choices, and pattern as a language for contemporary social and environmental concerns. “Quilts are a landscape, capable of being altered over time like the environment or a body.”

You can meet Amy, Emiko and the other emerging artists in person at the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands July 16-19 in Downtown Asheville, NC!
