Today is February 1st it’s also Black History Month. It may be the shortest month out of the year but we definitely have so many amazing people to thank for paving the way. We should always remember to take care of each other and never beat each other down like Tyre Nichols was in early January.

Let’s just say that I am not the best at interpreting landscape images 🏞️.

I will eventually get better at this by the end of the year. I don’t usually do landscapes which is why I’m challenging myself this year.

I will say I have a ways to go with learning how to work with pastels 😂.

How do you think I did?

I kept it simple today with a very simple landscape.

I bought some new soft pastels by because I wanted to know what handmade soft pastels are like. I will have to admit like always with art products you get what you pay for.

These pastels are a dream to work with and blend so beautifully! I worked in my watercolor notebook again which I think I am just going to continue to use until it’s full of all my soft pastel learning.

The medium is not the easiest to work with but with practice I will get there. I am also very pleased with how my perfect bound notebook is holding up!

Ok the desk is a mess but that’s a sign of creativity, right 😂! I decided to try watercolor paper this time for my soft pastel painting.

I’m working in a perfect bound watercolor notebook 📔 that I made and I’m using soft pastels and the few NuPastels that I have.

Today I learned that the NuPastels blend way better, that I’m not sure I have the right blending tool and that I think the only way to seal this is with a spray fixative.

I am enjoying this new art medium even though it’s super messy. I think what I like most about soft pastels is how much I get to use my hands!

Are you giving a new art medium a try this year???

I’m challenging myself to learn about a new art medium this year 🖍️.

I’ve decided on soft and oil pastels. I took 30 minutes this morning to just play around with the Faber Castell soft pastels that I have.

I enjoyed the process of finding a reference photo for a landscape and applying it to my art.

I learned today that the smooth blue mixed media paper that I have is not the best paper for the pastels 🔖. The pastels didn’t have anything to grip on to.

Im thinking that maybe I could sand this paper or add a layer of gesso so that the pastels would adhere better. If you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments!

Sometimes all you need is a moment to yourself to be creative.

I snuck down to the basement this morning and created with no plan in mind.

The collage elements were picked so quickly once I started digging through my stash.

The stitching made my heart happy and adding the Swarovski crystals gave it the bling it needed.

My heart feels happy and my soul fills filled. I need to remember to schedule this time in for me everyday. thank you for making such amazing collage books!
