Care And Feeding for wooden palettes,
For my students and traditionalists.
Wooden palettes are like wood boats in that they require attention. Cleaning the mixing area after each use with a solvent like pure gum turpentine or mineral spirits then applying linseed oil 1:3 ( 1 part linseed oil to 3 parts solvent). This feeds the wood and creates a layer that allows paint to be removed easily. You can use 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove old dry paint on wood or glass palettes.
I prefer wood in the field and glass palettes in the studio. Sunny Side Pure Gum Turps is our choice for palettes and mixing our oil mediums.
