“Dexxy”, a rescued Airedale Terrier now living the good life! Her parents won a silent auction benefiting the Friends of the WNC Nature Center where I serve on the board and volunteer. She was unveiled today and they love it! I chose to draw her with Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils because they give a nice soft effect for all those furry curls, but I did use a few Polychromos colored pencils for some detail. 9”x12” Pastelmat paper. They also got a gift certificate to Frugal Framer here in Asheville and I can’t wait to see the framed piece!

A memorial portrait of Ossie. I loved the reference photo with his little tongue “bleep”. Unfortunately, the photo only had about half of him! I’m a cat owner, but every cat’s ears and other parts are unique. A lot of artistic license here, but I think he turned out well. Prismacolor pencils on 9”x12” Bristol Vellum paper with pan pastels for background.

Happy Anniversary to my friends! The reference photo was taken on their honeymoon in Italy several years ago. Not my normal drawing, although admittedly I was wishing for fur about halfway through. Lots of elements here, but so glad they liked how it turned out. Prismacolor pencils on 11"x14" Bristol Vellum paper.

“Mimi”. Mimi needed to be with her favorite mouse toy, so I added him! I use reference photos for my drawings, so it’s often a challenge to draw what’s not really there, especially when size, color and shading matter! But I’m satusfied that she’s loving her toy. Prismacolor and Faber Castell polychromos on 9”x12” Bristol Vellum paper.

“Romeo”, a very floofy Pyrenees! Pan pastels and Pitt pastel pencils. When I saw the reference photo I just knew he needed to look “soft” with all of that beautiful fur, so pastel pencil is my favorite. White fur in particular reflects everything around it, so that is why there is so much teal and several other colors in “white” fur. Drawn on 9”x12” pastelmat.

“Nellie”. Reference photos will “speak” to me and tell me what paper and pencils to use. This one screamed “black paper!” Used correctly, it makes the subject very dramatic and almost glow. Nellie was drawn using Prismacolor pencils on 9”x12” Fabriano Black paper.

Bella, gifted for Christmas! Black is never black…it’s blue, reds, purples, even greens. I use lots of lavender which is why I chose lavender for the background. Prismacolor and Faber Castell Polychromos pencils with pan pastel for the background on 9”x12” Bristol Vellum paper.
