11/18/2025

Composing a score for a Christmas film comes with built-in emotional expectations of warmth, nostalgia, wonder, and a musical “sparkle” that instantly signals the season. As a film composer, there's also a balance to honor those traditions while creating something unique to the film. The score for Christmas in Mistletoe captures those traditional elements and also features something unexpected; I decided to compose a waltz theme in a minor key that reflects the disillusioned mood of the main character. This theme was the actual starting point and builds with the storyline throughout the film.

Sleigh bells, celeste, warm strings, woodwinds, and choir textures have become sonic hallmarks of the holidays. But it’s not just instrumentation; it’s the harmony, too. Christmas scores often draw on orchestral colors, major key progressions, and evocative chord substitutions that create that signature feeling of comfort and uplift.

Some Christmas films lean into whimsy and magic, others into romance or heartfelt family moments. The challenge is weaving the timeless holiday sound with the emotional truth of each scene so it never feels generic or predictable. So, composing music for a holiday film is similar to how we feel about our own holidays; they are full of emotions, unpredictable and hopefully memorable!

IT"S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR when suspense and psychological thrillers take center stage — the perfect season for dark soundscapes and edge-of-your-seat scores!

Composing music for a psychological thriller isn’t just about sound — it’s about control.
Every pulse, every silence, every dissonant note becomes part of the mind game.
The score doesn’t just support the story… it unlocks it.
