Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner I

Before Hurricane Helene permanently altered the Hickory Nut Gorge, where we live, I often lamented that we never saw bluebirds at our feeders or in our yard. We saw other generalists like house finches and goldfinches, but no bluebirds. As the land began to heal and support organisms again, especially with the return of abundant insect life, bluebirds have shifted into our local ecosystem and yard. Bluebirds prefer scattered trees and require a clean sightline to hunt insects.
The goldfinches, house finches, cardinals and many other birds still freeload off of our feeders, but suddenly our feeders are even more colorful; we’re starting to see birds that prefer forest edge ecosystems and scattered tree habitat instead of dense forest habitats. Birds that require deeper forest and older trees have declined in the area. Experts estimate that our gorge lost between 30 and 90 percent of our trees as a result of wind, floods and landslides from Hurricane Helene. Upcoming works will investigate the resulting shift in species. This is the first in that new series.

New work by Lauren Betty is in da house!

Blue Ribbon

Strange name for a horse I thought, as I was putting my foot into the stirrup to begin my 8 day backcountry trip into the Teton Wilderness. As sure footed as her name, this 16.1 hand draft/ cross, flea bitten grey mare took me on an epic adventure through Wyoming that I will never forget. With her guidance, I traveled close to 100 miles in backcountry, slept under the stars, escaped into wild wilderness territory that ,maybe, 20 people see in a year. Untouched waterways, waterfalls, extreme altitudes, plateaus, rock cliffs, mountains and meadows. This painting was created in the days after my return to the studio, and it could only be of the magestic creature, my sure footed trail partner, Blue Ribbon.

The Space Between I

We know that nature is an interconnected web of interaction and existence. Magnolias are the matriarchs of the forest. They are the first angiosperms / flowering plants and support myriad species like cardinals, who eat the protein rich seeds and shelter in the strong branches of magnolias. But the connections in life are so much deeper than this.
Physical bodies like trees, birds, humans, and even stones are not solid, but matter suspended in a dynamic and complex energy field. This is not conjecture, this is proven. All things are connected. All things interact. All things are energy.
In this painting I present multiple categories of connection. The magnolia’s strong and glorious boughs and flowers have a symbiotic connection with the cardinals. I also gave the cardinals auras in this painting to suggest their energy field and sentience. The iridescent marbling which reoccurs in my work, represents life force, the living, pulsing energy of life.

Over the Top Meadows

Ever since taking on The Pisgah Project, I’ve been surprised, even astonished, by how many spots around Asheville and the surrounding areas offer unique views and perspectives of Mt. Pisgah. Recently I was invited to the home of a client on what used to be a dairy farm. The former pastures are now yards and homes, young trees taking root, and in the distance, this mountain that changes very little in our lifetimes. I love these unexpected glimpses of her, seeing her different ridges and wrinkles. She’s so gorgeous!

This painting had me thinking about Pulitzer Prize winning
poet, Mary Oliver’s “The Summer Day,” and her revolutionary,
yet gentle permission to just stop and look - observe. She
writes about falling into the grass, kneeling there, learning how
to be idle and blessed. That’s the feeling I wanted this painting
to hold.
