I’ve created as a professional artist for 10 years. I’d like to share 10 lessons I’ve learned to abide by through this humbling pursuit:
1. Have fun! Pursue happiness and try to create what you’d like to experience more of in this world.
2. Create often! Try to not be too harsh in critiquing what you make, as I’ve found that artists are often their own harshest critics and this can impede artistic growth.
3. Experiment with what you make and don’t worry too much about what other people think about it. The perception of art is subjective and constantly changing. Be true to yourself.
4. Share your work when you feel ready and seek to diversify the audience of your art. Consider who is this art being made for and why.
5. Don’t create art only in hopes of making money with the primary focus of financial success in mind. There are no guarantees in the art world, and going about creating work with disingenuous capitalistic intentions first often reflects poorly through the art.
6. It’s good to be different and create work that is unique. People like when artwork stands out and is innovative.
7. Find time to create even when life feels challenging or your energy is being drawn elsewhere. Even a little bit of time creating is better than not doing it at all. The same is true with finding a space to or materials with which to create; work with what you have and try to make the best of it.
8. Although others may not need to have control over what you create, it’s good to consider feedback received and apply what’s beneficial in your art practice.
9. Be honest and try your best. Keep it real.
10. Remember that the creative journey isn’t necessarily a competition nor does it have to take place on a linear path or within a certain timeframe. Take time to nourish yourself through wellness so that you can enrich the art.
