On the scale of mistakes I’ve made as a parent, I do think this is pretty low. To be honest.

But it’s still something I think about, because I know that what seems like an off-handed comment to me could become part of her inner monologue. I’m very excited to have found a way to make up for it. More on the story behind the title of this exhibition to come. ✨

Do you have a little comment from someone (good or bad) that got stuck in your psyche and still impacts the way you allow yourself to create?

One thing I love learning and talking about is the way that simple arts activities can be really powerful skill-development opportunities. Often, it’s things we do naturally. As a mother, artist, and behavior analyst, I find it so validating (and motivating) to know some of the science behind why it’s important.

A meditation on motherhood, creativity, and work.

It’s very important to me that I let her see me working. That I welcome her in, while prioritizing my goals. In doing this, I believe that I teach her how to hold fast to her own.

When it’s time to focus, I won’t be stopping to make a quesodilla, charge an iPad, find a sock, or start the dishwasher. All of that must wait.

I will, however, always make room for her in my studio. I will give her a brush and invite her to paint on my paintings and to make her own. I will show her what it means to live a creative life.

Sometimes it is that deep and I LOVE talking about it. 😌

Herons show up in literature and myth to represent liminal spaces, transitions, wisdom, inner guidance, and fortitude. As these bunnies find themselves tired from their grand adventure, they’ve fallen asleep. Slumped in their baskets and unaware that a small group of shimmering herons have arrived to guide them - even as they rest. These herons themselves are liminal, not quite fully realized, and in between reality and fantasy. The herons have lassoed their balloons in gossamer threads, gently pulling them toward their North Star.

These pieces are growing increasingly narrative as I imagine new vignettes and the symbolism available to help tell their story.

This one will be part of the upcoming exhibition at Children’s National Hospital - I Hope that the message of productive and restorative rest speaks to someone on the day they need to hear it.

Do you like hearing about them?

Select pieces from my romantic Storybook Botanicals series are now available as archival giclee prints. Each piece is printed-to-order in a variety of standard size options (making framing easy).

I spent *many* hours perfecting these with my printer to get them as close to the originals as humanly possible. It was time well-spent because I am so proud of the way they turned out.

This piece found her home before she even arrived at the gallery. The buyer had fallen in love with this series - N E V E R T H E L E S S - from my first delivery to .gallery in the fall. She’d been patiently waiting for her painting to arrive and she knew it was, “the one,” immediately. (This is usually how it works with these - honestly, they’re in charge.) Arriving before opening to see it in-person.

The best part is that, unbeknownst to us all, her son had also been messaging me about this exact piece behind the scenes on insta. He was fairly certain he wanted to buy it and was disappointed when it sold immediately, UNTIL he found out that it was his mom who got it. 😂 Now, he can visit the piece while he waits for the one that speaks to him.

I got to enjoy a little bit of family lore and was absolutely thrilled to put all of these pieces together, a detective moment.

Interestingly, this piece also created my first “viral” moment on instagram and helped me welcome 6,000 new followers since the beginning of Feb. People were drawn to the co-creative process I’ve developed with my daughter, the energy, and the vibes (I think).

I named her Confetti before any of these aspects were known to me, but clearly, there has been much to celebrate! 🎉

Buying original art creates an eco-system of mutual benefits. I’m grateful to the collectors who share their stories and opens their homes, Beate who shares her gallery, and my daughter who shares her gifts with me. I’m grateful for the support and love. I’m grateful to paint in ways that fill my heart and connect with others.

There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave it here for today.

Xoxo,
Hannah

Want to do something to build your kids neuroaesthetic engagement capacity? Of course you do.

It’s so simple; you can probably do it today. Start with observing and labeling. This simple strategy helps to create the mental framework for advanced metacognition later in development. Metacognition, thinking about thinking, is a huge component of cognitive wellness and development.

Im Hannah, a fine artist, applied behavioral scientist, and mom, exploring ways that the field of neuroaesthetics, brings all these interests together 💕

More magic, more color, more unexpected combinations whose sole functions are to delight and intrigue.

More beauty, more honesty, more authenticity, more playfulness, more persistence, more joy, more love, there is always room for more.

The fact that we can experience these ideals through art is far from ancillary. Simply central to the expression of our shared humanity.
