⭐️Introducing the Asbury Park Mural Practice Wall⭐️

The City of Asbury Park is launching a new opportunity for local artists to experiment and learn in a public setting.

The Practice Wall is a project of the Asbury Park Public Art Commission, created to support Asbury artists who want to explore public art. It will serve as an open, rotating mural surface where artists can test materials, work at scale, and develop ideas without the commitment of a permanent installation or a competitive application.

This is a great opportunity for artists who have wanted to try something new, take a concept off paper and onto a wall for the first time, or prepare for the experience of painting large and in public. The wall will change after each artist, creating an ongoing dialogue between artists and the community. Artists will register to use it.

We’re currently gathering interest from local artists. If you’d like to participate, please email Michele Alonso at [email protected] with a few examples of your current work and a brief note about how you envision using the space. Interested artists will be invited to a Zoom meeting to learn more.

5 Years of the Giving Tree…

What started as a fun idea to make a sculpture of a site-specific, large-scale holiday tree out of cardboard, has turned into a unique tradition that is perfectly suited for our “City by the Sea”. It is so very Asbury Park to do things a little different and that is why it’s the perfect place for this new tradition.

Arts & Culture are the life blood of Asbury Park and so it’s perfect that our cultural touch-points and traditions include art, music and history. I am so grateful to live, love and create in this City.

Super proud of and .hoffer for continuing to create these magnificent sculptures each year, in spite of the criticism and with curiosity, enthusiasm and of course, artistry.

Grateful to and our community for supporting, embracing and championing art and art experiences throughout the City and on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. A gift that keeps on giving.

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas to All and to all a good night.

✨ Fun facts about this year’s Giving Tree ✨

A closer look at this year’s “Giving Tree”. Each year, artists Porkchop & Bradly Hoffer transform cardboard into one of our City’s most unique traditions.

This beauty stands 5 feet taller than last year’s tree, thanks to a clever new internal design which allows for greater height.

The 11 sided design was created by hand-cutting 30 (4x 8 foot) sheets of cardboard and uses over 100 glue sticks to construct it.

The curved sections, inspired by the shape of ribbons and the flow of waves are actually the same size — the curves just create the illusion of variation.

We hope that you will be able to see our “Giving Tree’ in person this Holiday Season- a truly unique and positively Asbury Park tradition.

The Asbury Park Boardwalk and the Wooden Walls Project invite the community to celebrate the 5th anniversary of The Giving Tree—the 22-foot sculptural installation that has become one of Asbury Park’s most unique holiday traditions.

What began as an experimental idea has evolved into an iconic seasonal centerpiece, perfectly in step with Asbury Park’s long history of artistic innovation. From its earliest days as a cultural destination to its current creative renaissance, Asbury Park has always embraced the imaginative, the unexpected, and the boldly original.

Crafted entirely from cardboard—a material that, in its purest form, is recycled—the tree’s curved, stacked layers unfold into soft, flowing shapes reminiscent of curling holiday ribbon or draped fabric. Its form echoes the rhythm of ocean waves just beyond the Grand Arcade and mirrors the building’s Beaux-Arts ornamentation.

This year’s design marks another evolution in the collaborative practice of its creators, the internationally exhibited and locally based artist Porkchop and Asbury Park artist Bradley Hoffer. Their shared explorations in form, movement, and layered construction take new shape in this sculptural work—reflecting how creative practices naturally expand across mediums, much like the city it honors.

For generations, Asbury Park has been a place of reinvention, experimentation, and artistic expression. The Giving Tree continues that legacy by offering a holiday symbol that is anything but traditional—yet unmistakably Asbury Park: imaginative, sustainable, inclusive, and boldly original.

We recently had the pleasure of being part of “Painting Community: Asbury Park”, featuring Bordalo and his amazing creation, “Mother & Baby Foxes”, 2025, located on the Asbury Park Boardwalk.

Produced by PBS news division, NJ Spotlight News, “Painting Community” features short documentaries in which artists tell the stories behind their public art projects.

In this poignant video, learn more about world-renowned activist and artist, Bordalo and his process and inspiration. Also catch a glimpse of many of the beloved murals from the Wooden Walls Project and special appearances from a few members of our amazing community in our “City by the Sea”.

We are still so overwhelmed by the outpouring of kind words of support and enthusiasm for this special project in collaboration with Asbury Park Arts Council. And so grateful to for capturing so many memorable moments during this beautiful week watching magic happen.

COMING SOON 📣 Wooden Walls Project x Asbury Park Arts Council are excited to bring world-renowned environmental artist Bordalo Il, to install one of his large-scale trash animal murals on Asbury Park Boardwalk

Beginning Monday October 6, Bordalo II will create a 3-D, mural of a mother and baby fox made out of trash donated by the community over the past few months 🦊 The fox is an animal that has become a beloved symbol along the shoreline after the 2019 Ocean Grove pavilion fire, when a family of foxes made their home in the ruins, capturing the hearts of boardwalk dwellers and photographers during the quiet days of the Covid lockdowns. Today, foxes continue to roam the beaches and capture hearts.

♻️ During Bordalo II’s stay, he will assemble and install the mural using the very items the community provided, which ranged from car bumpers to old bike tires to children’s play equipment.

➡️ Come watch the install in action starting on Monday, October 6 and come back daily for a progress check.
