When the Truck Wins (A Sermon in Two Parts)

Rev. Carol Thomas Cissel, Preaching

August 30, 2026

Asking for help is damn hard. For many of us, it is our greatest weakness…our Achilles' heel. Instead of reaching out to others in times of need, we try to manage everything on our own—we forge ahead, fixing problems, making plans, and handling life’s challenges ALONE. Does this sound familiar? Many of us slip into "Olivia Pope” mode on a daily basis…tackling every tough situation by ourselves. We assess our problems, manage logistics, and, as Western culture teaches us, project an image of utmost competence. Meanwhile, we are neglecting the unseen wounds beneath the surface—wounds that need help from others to heal. Wounds that we are often not even aware of. Come, let’s talk about setting perfection and competence aside and instead Asking For Help When We Need It.

"Show Up and Be Counted" What does it mean to be part of a community--a congregation, a neighborhood, a country? How do we take care of each other, and how do we let each other know what we need? Rev. Amanda will explore our bonds with each other...through the theological lens of a database. Really.

Me & My Collar

Rev. Carol Thomas Cissel, Preaching

In August 2025, after uniformed, armed, National Guard were deployed to patrol the streets of Washington DC, every day … Rev. CTC decided to wear her “uniform “, a clergy collar, every day too. Not just to church on Sundays. Not only to the office, UUA events or weddings, memorial services, and hospital visits. Everywhere. To the pharmacy. To Physical Therapy, the dry cleaner, Starbucks and Home Depot. Sunday, as her occasionally embarrassing, very unfashionable, and often Holy experiment nears the one-year mark — she’s ready to look back, share a few stories and answer your questions about being a highly visible, uniformed helper.

"Guided by Our Values" Join Rev. Amanda and the UUCA children's program, as well as voices from across the generations, as we reflect on our core UU values and how they help us make choices and stay hopeful. The UUCA band will help us celebrate our work as everyday people, wondering where we come from and dreaming about how far we'll go.

"At Odds With the World" What does it mean to choose not to be "as normal as possible" but rather to claim one's own difference? How do we celebrate our selfhood when the world is built for someone else? Rev. Amanda will explore the idea of resisting the status quo through and with personal identity, drawing on both q***r theology and disability justice work.

"Ask Me Anything!" Our popular "question-and-sometimes-an-answer" service is back, with Rev. Amanda taking YOUR questions and occasionally managing to come up with an answer. Questions can be sent ahead of time to [email protected], or collected during the service. Bonus, the Big Ideas you're wondering about often become sermons later in the year!

In this worship service, Rev. Leika Lewis invites us to explore how we open ourselves to the expansiveness of our own inner truths, to the truths of those around us, and to the truths of those we have not yet—and may never—welcomed through our doors.
