Last week our guides Peter, Marlene, and Curtis hosted a fabulous group from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Tufts University. We love when lifelong learners visit because we learn as much from them as they do from us! ❤

There are just a few days left to see the first-ever retrospective exhibit on the celebrated Black and Indigenous sculptor Edmonia Lewis at the Peabody Essex Museum! Many of you who follow us likely know that we are big fans of her work. It was very special to see so many of her sculptures in person, especially her stunning portrait of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and The Old Arrowmaker, which was inspired by Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha."

A few delightful surprises included a bust of Charles Sumner by Cyrus Dallin's teacher Sidney Morse (whose Quincy studio Dallin joined after severing ties with Truman Bartlett), and sculpture process videos by our friends Bob and Lisa Shure at Skylight Studios, Inc.. We even had the opportunity to view the reproduction cast and armature created for the videos on a recent visit to Skylight!

We had a blast with 17 kindergarteners from the Lesley Ellis School last Thursday! We explored how Cyrus Dallin conveyed strength in sculpture and how we can find strength within ourselves. The kids loved acting out different strong poses they observed in the museum. Then, they drew pictures of themselves the way they would have wanted to look if Cyrus Dallin were sculpting them. After a picnic in the park, they were off with their teachers to discover more of Dallin's art in Arlington center! 💪🚶‍♀️‍➡️✨

Did you know that Cyrus and Vittoria Dallin's son Arthur was a brilliant stained glass artist? This month 93 years ago (1933), Arthur's 30-foot high "Christ in Majesty" window was unveiled in the choir of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Middletown, CT. Boston Globe art critic A.J. Philpott called it "one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical symbolism in New England." Arthur's windows can be found in churches across New England, including the Park Ave Congregational Church in Arlington, MA and First Church in Cambridge, MA.

Arthur's promising career was tragically cut short. In October 1939 - about one month after France entered the second World War - Arthur enlisted in the 12th Foreign Legion. Just 8 months later, he was killed by mortar fire during the German assault on Luzancy sur Marne on June 12, 1940. He was 42 years old.
