Every artist seems to be chasing Spotify growth.
Every guru seems to be teaching Spotify strategy.
And that's exactly what made me stop and think.

💬 Do you think musicians spend too much time focused on Spotify?

Music is more accessible than it's ever been.

Every song. Every artist. Instantly available.

So why does it feel like fewer artists become part of our identity than they once did?

I think something changed, and I'm curious if you've noticed it too.

Do you feel as connected to music today as you did growing up? Why or why not?

I have 188 songs on Spotify.
53 of them have fewer than 1,000 streams.
That statistic forced me to rethink how I've been measuring success as an independent artist.

💬 How many songs do you currently have released?

I assumed Tidal was an expensive audiophile platform for wealthy music lovers. Then I finally checked the pricing.
Turns out I built an entire opinion around an assumption I'd never verified.

💬 What's something you were wrong about for years?

10/16/2026

For years, I focused almost exclusively on Spotify growth. Then I started asking a question I'd never considered before: What if Spotify isn't actually the goal?

💬 What do you think is the biggest goal most musicians are chasing right now?

The first time I heard Eruption, I honestly didn't understand what I was hearing.

I didn't know what tapping was. I didn't understand the technique.

I only knew I'd never heard a guitar make those sounds before.

Some songs entertain you. Others completely change your understanding of what's possible.

What was that song for you?

When I bought 1984, I kept waiting for the filler track. The weak song.
The one you'd skip every time. It never arrived.

That album taught me that great records aren't just collections of singles. Every song has a purpose.

What's an album you think has zero filler?

Most hit songs tell you exactly what they're doing. Jump felt different.

The whole thing sounded like it might spin completely out of control, yet somehow it always snapped back together at exactly the right moment.

That's one reason I couldn't stop listening.

What was the first song that completely obsessed you?

The first time I saw Eddie Van Halen's striped guitar, I had no idea what it was.

I just knew it didn't look like anything else I'd ever seen.

Years later I learned it was the Frankenstrat. Back then it simply looked like proof that musicians could build something completely their own.

What was the first instrument that made you stop and stare?

If you wanted to hear your favorite song again in 1984, there was no Spotify, no YouTube, no playlists.

You sat by the radio with a blank cassette, ready to hit Record the second the song started. And somehow the DJ always talked over the intro.

That frustration eventually sent me to the record store to buy my own copy of Van Halen's 1984.

Did you ever record songs off the radio?
