The Dusty Watkins Team Roping School in Tuttle Oklahoma was full Nov 16 & 17th and included a family of local ropers who had requested a school in their hometown of Tuttle! Others came from the Tulsa area, Marietta, and as far as Houston Tx. Ages ranged from 12 years old to 50+. After 2 full days of riding and roping with Dusty, it was time to offer the students a fun competition at the end of the school.
Ty Hebert of Wynnewood OK was the winner of the heading. Ty was the first to call and enter when the school was posted. He said, ”put me in, I haven’t roped in 7 years.”
Ty had put his roping on the back burner while he switched careers and began building a new business. This is what team roping is all about. Your always welcome back and can start at any level. The heeling was won by Saul Gonzalez, a pretty handy heeler and master of cooking up some great tacos!
Thanks to my helpers:
-Teddy Kreger
-Billy Nelson
-Danielle Nelson
-Charlie Hebert
Special thanks to Jose Meraz for his spectacular arena and hospitality.

The Dusty Watkins Team Roping School was full and included ropers from ages 13 to 65, all there to improve their roping skills. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new students. Thanks to Bart and Toni Bonfantini for hosting the school! Awesome job!

Here is a clip of Dusty “tying on” at a World Series #13 roping with his partner, Carter Gurolla. Ardmore OK.
Dusty has had serious hand injuries over his roping career.
Tying on allows him to compete with confidence. He has developed a winning method that works for him, his horse and his partner!

From: Sherrie Watkins. For my lady friends only! Thought you would like this. 🤣. Dusty has a rodeo tomorrow. I have always bathed his horse for him but today I wasn’t feeling well / sore throat etc. I told him that Pistol really needed a bath. So he said ok, he could do it. A few minutes later, he calls me from the barn and ask me if I had any of that “Paul Norman” shampoo?🙄😂. So -he has Paul Mitchell mixed up with Merle Norman ! Lol! 😂🤣 anyway I went out to check on him and thank God he found the EZ-All shampoo that Weaver Leather sends him! He was going to put Quick Silver on his tail, and I said no, “Paint Man” that goes on his white! Then I watched him apply the EZ-All detangler on Pistols tail like it was mustard on a hotdog! (It only takes a little more than quarter size amount in the palm of your hands!) Overall he did a pretty good job and He said he had fun doing it, however I’m calling Weaver for refills on Monday. Got to love these Cowboys.

From: Sherrie Watkins. As Dusty flew out today from Dallas Love Field, headed to California for a school, its just a reminder to me of how and why he is still doing what he loves to do. His sponsors have stayed with him for 20 years, and it all started because of his horse. If you roped or showed horses from 1992-2012, you probably knew this horse. Zig just passed away at the age of 31. He was by APHA - Dixies War Drum. Dusty bought him as a 4 year old from a boarding stable in Los Angeles Calif. That same year he was very close to selling Zig to Hollywood actor and stuntman, Monty Montana. The video tape was made for Monty, but after weeks of it laying in the seat of my truck, I finally put the pressure on Dusty and ask him are you going to send this video to Monty or not? He said, "don't mail it" From that point on, Zig put Dusty in the limelight of the horse business. He was able to quit his job as a carpenter and live his life as a professional rodeo cowboy & horseman and credits it all to Zig. When Dusty decided to retire Zig, he told everyone, "this is it, this is the last run Im making on Zig"... backed in the box, reached down and took his bridle off and made an amazing run. (see photo) Then stepped off, loosened him up, and walked him out of the arena. He lived the rest of his life at Nikki Jos ranch in Oklahoma.
