It’s almost that time again! Our annual Donation Dash Salebration is just around the corner.

Join us in community for this much loved event. Each year we head to Cal Poly as students exit for their Summer adventures. We help go through EVERYTHING they are getting rid of and disperse food, household items, clothing, electronics, and other usable items back into community. We also have our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Donation Dash Salebration!

Clothing of all sizes, medical supplies, kitchen and house wares, toys, lights, and more There will also be items culled from the Sanctuary collection including tools, books, furniture, a fridge, typewriters, and more.

Thanks to Arcata Bay Self Storage for letting us have the sale there on South E St. this is one block inland from and not Rainbow self storage. Thanks to the Co-Op for their CCF grant that helps us coordinate the Dash.

We will be accepting items from the community for another sale later this summer.

** photos from last year!! This year the sale woo be offsite due to construction!

The Music of Cedar Walton”
Arcata Playhouse,
May 3oth, doors 6:30, show 7 pm
$15-30 sliding scale

Creative Sanctuary is excited to present “An Homage to the Message: the Music of Cedar Walton”. Continuing their ongoing series of concerts honoring composers associated with Art Blakey, James Zeller et al gather to honor one of their favorite composers and pianists, the late great Cedar Walton.

“We love to have this platform to introduce the community to composers they may not have heard, or at least don’t hear as often. Also, Cedar’s tunes are just exquisite, beautifully composed and compelling vehicles for improvisation. We’re really excited to work on and share his music live,” says James.

The show will feature James Zeller on trombone, Russ Thallheimer on Tenor Sax, Matthew Seno on piano, Ramsey Isaacs on drums and Lee Phillips on Double Bass.

Donation Dash, Sortathon and Salebration 2026
May 14-16 & 20-23
Want to fight consumerism? Passionate about Mother Earth? We need you to help us with waste diversion! The Abundance Vortex calls you! (Sign up via our website, link in bio).
Please help us make Donation Dash 2026 successful! We are looking for not-squeamish types to help us as we lead the community volunteer effort to divert waste during college move out. Last year we redirected 8000 plus pounds of food, cleaning supplies, household goods and clothing the Sanctuary directly to other organizations, individuals in need, and through our bargain rummage sale (May 23).
On top of that we diverted a huge amount of recycling and compost from the landfill.
Some might say “It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.” But with such a fun crew we’d rephrase it:
“It’s fun job and we get to do it!”

We’ve pruned the apple trees but there’s still lots to do! (Surprised that the garden is never done?) We’ll be prepping beds, weeding, potentially planting and more. Bring gloves and your favorite gardening tools and some water and we will bring some too.

Jazz Tribute:
honoring Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn
* March 27 * doors 6:30 pm, show 7 pm *
$15-30 * at the Arcata Playhouse

As Creative Sanctuary wonders what the heck to do in this crazy present moment, honoring some ancestors seems apropos. As they’ve done for two years running, the house band (sometimes known as the Humboldt Jazz Collective) will honor Duke Ellington his closest collaborator, Billy Strayhorn (Composer of Take the A Train among many other Ellington hits).

“We’re keeping it simple this year and using a quintet for most of the show with some special guests. These were big band pieces originally, of course, but with Duke and Strayhorn’s compositions the material is so deep that even with a small group there is still almost endless opportunity for exploration,” James Zeller says, “It allows us to be a bit more relaxed, and focus on the creative, improvised piece, worrying a little less about arrangements and reading parts as we’ve done in the past. Both ways are great obviously. We’re all practicing improvisers, so for us to get on the bandstand and play a night of Ellington, it’ll be a real comfort zone. As far as what we need to study for the show, we’ll each be taking the time to go back and explore recordings and dig into the history in that manner.”

The ensemble will include James Zeller (trombone and a few vocal features), Tree (viola, chromatic harmonica, saxophones), Brian Post (piano), Lee Phillips (double bass), and Ramsey Isaacs (drums), with special guests Miles Schmidt (tap dancing) and Katie Belknap (clarinet, bass clarinet and vocals).

The band will also be joined on at least one song by members of the Harambe Youth ensemble, including Josh and Joah Nicely (trombone and alto sax) and Harambe music instructor Olivia Obidah (trumpet).
