Florida is commemorating Emancipation Day today May 20, marking 161 years since enslaved people learned of their freedom. Join the North Florida African American Corridor - NFAAC proudly commemorates Florida's Emancipation Day for the third consecutive year! Our team works so hard to bring this history alive.

Come join us as we honor this significant moment in Florida’s history.

The celebration begins on May 22nd, 6-8 pm ET at Holy Family on 203 Dr. Frederick Humphries Street, Apalachicola, FL.
Commemoration follows on May 23rd, 10 am ET at The Negro Fort at Prospect Bluff. These events are free and open to the public.

Apalachicola Traders’ Canoe. Welcome to the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art, located at 86 Water Street, Apalachicola, Florida. This historic waterfront warehouse, built in 1836, primarily for cotton storage, is now owned by the City of Apalachicola. It serves as a venue for various arts and cultural activities highlighting the area's maritime history and is home to the Apalachicola Traders’ Canoe. On May 26, 2006, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported that Curtis Monroe, a logger from Eastpoint, Florida, recovered a dugout canoe measuring over 50 feet from the Apalachicola River. The vessel's marks indicate construction using metal tools, and its shape suggests it was a trading canoe used between 1750 and 1800, which carbon dating has corroborated. At over 50 feet in length, it is the longest dugout canoe recorded in Florida. Dugout canoes represent an ancient Native American technology later adapted by the Spanish, British, and American populations in Florida, with over 300 canoes documented in the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research's files. Conservators from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research's Conservation Laboratory carefully cleaned and preserved the canoe to ensure its protection for future generations. Special thanks to Franklin County Sheriff AJ Smith, Lt. Frances Messer, and Officer Jerald Thomas, and their inmate crew for assisting with the canoe case cleaning, and to North Florida African American Corridor's Vice President Valentina Webb and Tamara McIntyre for overseeing the operation.
