I had the unique opportunity to partner and creating a promotional piece of artwork for . In creating this painting, I wanted to showcase the rich history of my beloved fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., which has been in existence for 118 years as of 2024. Its members uphold the aims of “Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind.” Throughout the painting, the different shades of old gold and black pay direct homage to Jewel Robert Harold Ogle, who proposed the fraternity’s colors.
The Greek letters A Phi A are visible in two locations, honoring Jewel Henry A. Callis, who helped create the fraternity’s name, Alpha Phi Alpha. On the right side of the canvas, a watch face is depicted with the hour marker at 7 and the minute hand at 06, alongside a date window showing the number 4. This represents the founding date of the fraternity: December 4th, 1906. Additionally, the watch face features the words “seven jewels” and shows seven stars, symbolizing both the fraternity’s seven founders and jewels typically found in a watch. Cornell University is also depicted, as it is the location of the first chapter.
The sweeping seconds hand depicts a Axia Time company’s Logo. This shows the new relationship betweenAlpha Phi Alpha and Axia Time, a bespoke watch company that provides value and worth by way of high horology that shares a story with the wearer.
The art was inspired by the chant titled “The Alpha Train is Slowly Coming,” often heard during probate, as a symbolic gesture that change is slow but inevitable and forward-moving. A train can also be seen in the painting. To highlight the fraternity’s enduring relevance, I included a call-and-response element with the question “Who you with?” and the brothers’ response “Ice.”
Lastly, in the upper left-hand corner, there is a small crown. This symbol has multiple interpretations: some might see it as a crown. While others may perceive it as resembling the pyramids, which are tied to the fraternity’s heritage.
