Practice a technique hundreds of times and you will be consciously incompetent. Practice it thousands of times and you will become consciously competent. Practice it tens of thousands of times to become unconsciously competent. Therein lies the goal: to develop such familiarity and confidence with a technique that ex*****on no longer requires conscious thought; it simply flows from you. The process of reaching that level is highly cathartic, nourishing and fun. Many budding martial arts students want to earn a black belt. While it’s possible to become proficient a martial art in 2 or 3 years by attending 4 or more classes a week, excellence requires much more hard work, and mastery requires many, many more years of sustained effort. So, while it’s great to aim for high rank and mastery, those who savor each part of each class end up having a much more deeply enriching martial arts experience than students who merely focus on achieving their next promotion. Those who rush barely scratch the surface of the profound benefits good martial arts training offers in terms of personal and interpersonal development. We invite KarateKids of all ages to use the following link and walk the path of personal growth at Seichou Karate. Your first lesson is always free. OSU! https://bit.ly/3TcPLuy

We all want to be able to defend our person and principles, but learning how to fight can be daunting. At Seichou Karate, we don’t throw new students together and let them go at each other. Instead, we teach students to fight by means of a graduated process that works. By fighting frequently in a controlled context, students develop confidence in their ability to respond appropriately when under assault. As their confidence grows, they’re able to relax and make good choices to stay safe. Sometimes that’ll require fighting back. Other times it’ll mean avoiding the threat without throwing a punch. Fighting doesn’t come naturally to most people. So, the challenge for martial arts teachers is to guide students from a place of little knowledge and, perhaps, fear, to great understanding and confidence. At Seichou Karate, we do this gradually by teaching technique (how to strike, block and move), dance-like movement patterns performed against imaginary opponents, and contact free-fighting. This journey to tapping into a powerful, peaceful you takes time, but it’s profoundly rewarding when undertaken with the guidance of skilled, caring instructors. Yes, it's critically important to learn how to fight for self-defense. However, healthy human interaction is more important. In Japan, junior students trust their seniors and instructors because juniors believe their seniors and instructors have their best interests at heart. At Seichou Karate, seniors take an ownership interest in the development of juniors, which builds bonds of trust and fosters kindness. This is how traditional martial arts practice engenders good citizenship and enhances wholesome human interaction.
