While we had several artists retire in the early days of the pandemic, we were pleased to have other artists decide to join us when we reopened after the closure period. One of these was Gail Robin, whose needle-felted hedgehogs and sheep, plus gnomes, owls, mushrooms, pumpkins, flowers, and much more have delighted customers ever since. She has made shawls that would complement any outfit, in addition to her many decorative items. Stop by soon for some great fall items, such as pumpkins in several colors, fall vegetables and the odd ghost.

We’re the “craft show” that’s open year-round. Come in now for some special items for the current season and early holiday shopping, and come back any time during the year for gifts for any occasion or something for yourself. Our 21 local artisan members have so many creative ideas and bring in new items all the time. We change up the display and theme every two months throughout the year and in some shows we highlight one of the craft guilds that are members of Artisans United. Currently, the Potomac Polymer Clay Guild is featured.

Have you seen the latest show at the Craft Gallery of Artisans United? The Potomac Polymer Clay Guild is featured in addition to the 21 permanent members of the craft gallery. Register now for our upcoming class where you will discover the exciting medium of polymer while learning the basics of this diverse art medium. We will learn how to cover and decorate ink pens, by using techniques for color blending, millefiore, and applying texture. The class is on October 7th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Craft Gallery (Fred M. Packard building, 4022 Hummer Road, in the Annandale Community Park).

We are excited to welcome a new artist to the gallery. Sheila Lynch uses hard pastels and pastel pencils to create lovely pictures of cool cars and musical instruments. The car pictures are prints; the musical instruments are originals. Sheila is a multi-talented artist and musician who has taught and been involved in various community activities in her career. We have some very exciting items in the Craft Gallery from now until the end of October, but don’t wait—these are one-of a-kind pieces. Several members of the Potomac Polymer Clay Guild are part of a special show within our Fall Show. These photos show some of their work. Stained glass artist Henry Miller joined the craft gallery in early 2022. He has become known for his amazing dragons, as well as his butterflies, abstract pieces, and more. All are designed to hang and move with the air currents indoors or outdoors. Some of his insects can also be displayed on a surface rather than hanging. His colorful and artistic designs catch your eye and engage the mind—how does he do that!?

Jean Lee has been a member of Artisans United and the Craft Gallery since the beginning, which was in 1988! She serves as our historian, membership chair, and coordinator for guild shows. She has worked in stained glass since the 1970s and has developed a whimsical and personal adornment art form. Often the activity in a piece of glass directs the design, color and a theme that incorporates beads, stones, shells, fibers, recycling heirlooms, vintage, personal treasures and found objects. Works have evolved from personal wearable jewelry to home jewelry as small sculptures. Her background in clothing design and floral designs has a strong influence on the design inspirations of the works.

The Fall Show at the Craft Gallery is set and ready for your visit. We are welcoming the Potomac Polymer Clay Guild to this show, joining our 21 permanent artist members for this show. Creating art from paper is the specialty of long-time member Sylvie Koztrewzki. Her creations are inspired by her travels in North Africa and India. She creates from scratch, combining paper with glass crystals, metal, wire, fiber, wood and her own hand-made beads, resulting in items that are unique in composition, texture and color. Jewelry and various decorative pieces show the many ideas she has in ways you will find intriguing. Sylvie serves Artisans United as chair of the Setup Committee and you will appreciate her creativity every time you visit the gallery and see the artistry of the arrangement of the work of all our artists.

Jane Hannan joined the craft gallery in January 2021, displaying acrylic painting on various objects, for example a beach scene on an old window, flowers and other designs on bottles with fairy lights inside, small glass containers, wine glasses, furniture, and more. She has more recently added woven baskets to her repertoire. These colorful and creative pieces would make a great addition to any home. She gets her ideas from things she sees, such as pictures and things that exist in nature. Then she decides on her materials and how she can render the designs. She has been organizing and teaching classes at the gallery recently and serves as secretary for Artisans United.

Paul Gesalman is a photographer who specializes in unusual pictures from out-of-the-way places he has visited (for example, Azerbaijan, Venezuela, the Republic of Georgia). He joined the gallery in 2015 and serves as treasurer for Artisans United. He often uses unique and vintage frames he finds at local charity shops, as a way to support the community and reduce waste.

Necklaces, earrings, rings, bookmarks, photographs, knitted scarves and hats, and notecards are all designed and created by artist Sharon Eppler, who joined the craft gallery in 2021. Her wire-woven jewelry features stones and crystals, and her knitted accessories often include beads or crystals. Sharon’s talents also include graphic design, and she has helped us update the flag that greets you when you visit the gallery and other items such as our brochure. Check out her work next time you visit!

Jewelry artist Marilu Del Carpio creates one-of-a-kind wire and braided jewelry. In addition to participating in the Craft Gallery of Artisans United, she has been active in the arts scene in the area for many years. She includes stones and beads from her native Peru in some of her pieces. In addition to creating works to sell, she teaches classes. Lynn Chadwick joined the Craft Gallery of Artisans United as an artist in July. She makes modern jewelry using copper, niobium and glass. Her bracelets, necklaces, and earrings also include fun items she has collected. For example, a coffee-themed bracelet has tiny coffee mugs from South America. For something to enhance your windows, you can’t go wrong with the stained and fused glass work by Diane Cairns. She is a long-time member of the craft gallery and also owned a stained glass store for 26 years. Her pieces range from elegant to whimsical, providing something for everyone’s taste. She currently heads the jury committee for Artisans United.

Would you like to make a necklace like this, from beads you’ve made yourself? We have a class coming up to do just that. On September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to noon, join us to learn how to make colorful beads from paper, then make a necklace. If you are intrigued by wood, one of our artists, Dan Burke, creates beautiful boxes using native hardwoods and unusual woods such as Brazilian cherry, rosewood, ribbon sapele, and quartersawn sycamore. He strives to create pieces that highlight the wood grain and color and to build pieces that one wants to touch and use. His wife selects the special fabrics that line the boxes. Dan has been a member of the craft gallery for more than 10 years and serves the Artisans United organization as vice president and webmaster. Visit the craft gallery to truly appreciate the beauty of these boxes.

Artisans United will be joining with the Annandale Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations and businesses to celebrate National Night Out. Annandale celebrates National Night Out at the Annandale Shopping Center this Tuesday, August 1st, where free glitter tattoos, face painting, refreshments, martial arts demonstrations, raffles and children's activities are planned (all FREE) to promote community involvement in crime prevention and neighborhood camaraderie while meeting and celebrating our first responders.

Bring the family, your neighbors and friends to enjoy this evening of family fun, and the opportunity to meet local fire and police officers. FREE activities, carnival games, food and fun for children and families.

We have two new pull-toys by our wood artist, Bob Simoniz. They are adorable, and join the other toys and carved wood items he makes. Here's a video of one of them. The turn to autumn and chilly nights makes me think about how nice it would be to have one of these beautiful scarves. Some include beads, adding to the appeal.
