A friend just asked to purchase this woodcut of Vernazza, one of the five small cities near the Italian Riviera, called Cinque Terre. There is no road from town to town (though train or boat are options too) and most people walk a beautiful path and the towns are relatively close. The path goes up into the hills and then comes down to the Mediterranean for each town. Wonderful views of each town as you hike along. While most of my wood block prints are on one type of paper, this one and some of the more intricate ones work best on Thai Kozo paper (a mulberry fiber paper that is super thin, but very tough). The first photo is the back side of the print before I pulled it off the wood block. You can see it bleeds all the way through, and even made a ghost print on the piece of paper that I put on top so that the ink doesn't get on the felt blanket that goes between the paper and the metal roller. Wood Block Print of the Chain Bridge in Budapest, linking Buda and Pest. The first permanent bridge over the Danube in Budapest, built mid 1800s. Blown up in 1945 by the retreating N***s, rebuilt in 1949. Somewhat abstract background painting of yellow, leaving some of the paper white, then printing the wood plate on this background. The slightly off-black in places is my inability to take a photo without some backflash. It is actually pretty uniformly black. About 16"x20", uses up a lot of ink! Multiple Plate Wood Block Prints of modern day Mona Lisa (who would be, of course, holding a cell phone). This is a great example of how easy it is to mess things up with multiple plates. I used a new method for color separation and ended up with one plate that wasn't aligned with the others. Thought I could fix it by adjusting its position in the jig, but obviously it was pretty hit and miss. The one with the grayer, wood grained background is a 'ghost print' meaning that I didn't re-ink before printing the next one. I kind of like the misaligned ones. Wood block print (on hand painted background) and paper cutout part of the Kaleidoscope Art Group Exhibit at The Common Cup in Ann Arbor. Reception next Friday, March 15th, 6:30-8:30. Nine artists exhibiting. Wood block print is of Kalaloch Beach in the Olympia National Park. Huge, rainforest trees get washed up on the beach. Paper cutout is of Cherry Hill Preserve. Three wood block prints on display at the Art Gallery at Silver Maples in Chelsea. The orange striations are mostly due to the grain of the wood (pine) and not any carving. Reception is this Sunday, March 10th from 2:00-3:30. Exhibit stays up till April 29th. This is part of the Saline Painter's Guild exhibit. Lots of great artwork to see!
