With the University of Michigan’s campus-wide theme “Human Health and Well-Being” shaping the academic year ahead, UMS is diving into the powerful ways the arts can inspire healing, foster connection, and support wellness.

Whether through music shared in a concert hall, stories told on stage, or moments of laughter that illuminate deeply personal experiences, these performances remind us that creativity can help us better understand ourselves and one another.

We mourn the loss of great American conductor, composer, and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas. From his 25-year tenure leading the San Francisco Symphony to founding the innovative New World Symphony professional training academy in Miami, Thomas’s brilliance on and off the podium inspired generations of audience members and musicians alike.

Michael Tilson Thomas led 18 concerts at UMS between 1988 and 2014, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, and the San Francisco Symphony. View programs on UMS Rewind: umsrewind.org/artists/?id=1691

A galvanizing force in classical music as a conductor, composer, pianist and evangelist, he spent 25 years as music director of the San Francisco Symphony.
