Flying Frog Creations Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Independent Artist Flying Frog Creations is a small business in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Area by local artist Kimberly Mertz.

Each ceramic work is sculpted with handbuilding and/or wheel-thrown ceramic techniques. The pieces are fired at a local studio and then the detail work begins! Kim draws the composition on in pencil as a guide, and then carefully paints on vibrant underglazes in intricate and playful designs. Clear glaze is often applied to seal the piece and make the colors stand out, and then they are ready to u

se and enjoy! Ms Mertz grew up in the woods and she has spent decades looking at flowers and creatures in an up close and personal sort of way. She loves to add favorite elements she sees in nature to her designs, and has spent time crafting detailed items out of other mediums (like gorgeous fairy doors out of polymer clay) that combine her love of nature and whimsey.

Salamander and Snail Pipe

Walking in a quiet forest you may find some little creatures who make almost no sound, peacefully making their way through life beneath damp logs and leaves on the ground. They are easy to miss, and lovely to see. This piece brings the peace of growing ferns unfurling, snails gliding, and salamanders wiggling along the cool green stem of the pipe.

Dark green glazed surface with details wiped clean for contrast. Sturdy and beautiful, this ceramic bowl insulates and gives a cooler, smoother hit than a glass piece can. Easy to use, easy to clean, and the large reservoir makes this piece great for passing at parties or sharing with a close friend or two.

New photo props arrived - including a little white tree to show off these black and gold ornaments, and more goodies that I plan to make in the future! I feel like I spent a decent amount on photo props and equipment to do my ceramics work this year, like probably more than I earned, but I am trying to remind myself that it is okay. Because this is still the first year I am working to make this my official business there is going to be more investing up front, and there will be a time when I am making more in sales. Right now it is all about laying a solid foundation for the years ahead.

Here we are as in olden days... but with a twist. Classic holiday ornament designs have been updated to include a haunting, spooky style that can satisfy those with a flair for decorating on the darker side of life.

Ceramic ornaments are lightweigh and will look great on natural or fake trees, hanging over the fireplace, in your kitchen, or anywhere else that could use something dark and delightful.

Bury Me in Roses pipe

I made two of these, and the first one I sold went to a funeral director!

Let this pipe be an elegant and comfortable memento mori while you smoke and contemplate life. We will all die some day, but while we are here we might as well do what we can to make our time more enjoyable. When we are gone we leave everything behind, and I hope that when I go I can be buried beneath a rose bush, or perhaps an apple tree, so my nutrients can give new life to something for the world to enjoy for years to come.

Bring your spooky style into all of your favorite spaces. Add some creepy elegance to your bathroom vanity or kitchen with this dark and delightful soap dispenser.

This piece was made and textured by hand, painted with black underglaze that was wiped away before clear glaze was applied, giving a smoky charcoal look to parts of the surface and highlighting the haunting design.

Measures 4.75 in /11.5 cm tall and has a 2.5 in 6.25 cm diameter opening

Holds approximately 10 oz / 300 ml liquid

Comes with cork lid with soap dispenser pump (black) included.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported local Ypsilanti artists at the Krampus Market this past weekend! It was a delightful event and I had the opportunity to meet and talk with so many wonderful visitors, vendors, and a few enchanted creatures.

In case you couldn't make it out but you are still interested in some special handmade ceramics for your holiday gifts, the online shop for my work is back up and running.
