A pleasure to welcome artist ransome to Hawk + Hive today. Working across painting and collage, Ransome creates richly layered works exploring family history, identity and the African American experience.
We’re delighted to be collaborating with him on an exhibition of new paintings planned for early 2028. More to come!

It means the world to have someone so fabulous to take the helm when I’m away. Helen Woolger is that person.

The paintings had to be small. Their scale was not incidental; it was part of the imaginative act. A large painting of a miniature figure would have turned the figure into something monumental. I wanted the paintings to retain the intimacy of toys held close to the body, arranged on a floor, or gathered into a private world.

Luke Dougherty’s “…and faintly falling” takes its title from the closing lines of James Joyce’s “The Dead,” the final story in Dubliners:

“…falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.”

As Joyce’s snow falls across Ireland, it draws the living and the remembered into one landscape. There’s an echo of that passage in Luke’s painting, where an owl’s pale feathers seem to merge with the air and snow around it - a moment between presence and disappearance.
