I first encountered David Hockney’s work as a young teenager on a visit to Tate Britain, in the form of Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy. It was one of those paintings that changes your idea of what art and the world could be. Who were these louche, lovely people? It was a window to a kind of life I had never imagined growing up in rural Sussex.
I rushed to buy the postcard in the museum shop and taped it to my bedroom wall as a kind of touch stone, and where it remained for my adolescent years.

Decades later in 2012 I visited Hockney’s exhibition A Bigger Picture at the Royal Academy. His monumental, exuberant East Yorkshire landscapes and the extraordinary works he created on an iPad were a revelation. It moved me to tears.

And of course the boys and the pools, the dogs and the parents, the life and the light.

A gentle iconoclast, joyful rebel, and maker of visions, Hockney remained endlessly curious and inventive to the end. It feels wrong that he’s not in the world anymore.

Salt Peanuts
Oil on canvas on panel, 36 x 30 inches

David Hornung’s title comes from the jazz standard, but it also feels like a description of the painting itself - playful, syncopated, a little unexpected. The result isn’t a picture of an idea. It’s a record of what happened.

Made famous by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker this bebop classic is built on speed, surprise, and playful improvisation. Its famously nonsensical refrain, “Salt Peanuts!”, feels less like a lyric than an exclamation point.
Open Thursday to Sunday, 11am-5pm

Who’s on the stoop?

We’re always happy to see artist, educator, and supporter of the art community, Lisa Pressman.

Dividing her time between New Jersey and Andes, Lisa creates layered abstract works that explore memory, transformation, and the passage of time. Working across encaustic, oil, cold wax, paper, and thread, she builds surfaces that are scraped, stitched, burned, and reworked - each carrying traces of what came before.

When she’s not in the studio, Lisa is often helping other artists find their way forward through thoughtful critique, conversation, and a deep commitment to creative practice.

My final visit to Mike Casey’s studio in Bovina before his upcoming exhibition, Offerings, with Carrie Mae Smith at Hawk + Hive.

Over the past few months, Mike has been revising and completing a remarkable series of still life paintings centered on domestic objects, food, and table settings. Quietly observed and beautifully rendered, these works find meaning in the everyday, elevating ordinary moments through attention, care, and craft.

Now I find myself waiting for that magical moment when the work arrives at the gallery and comes together for the first time. There is an alchemy that happens when an exhibition leaves the studio and enters the shared space of the gallery - individual works begin to speak to one another, unexpected connections emerge, and something larger than the sum of its parts reveals itself. I can’t wait to see these paintings in conversation with Carrie Mae’s work.

We have a pair of beautifully weathered W. & A.K. Johnston’s Charts of Anatomy & Physiology dating from the early 1900s. Produced under the direction of Sir William Turner - Professor of Anatomy and later Principal of the University of Edinburgh.

Depicting Heart & Arteries and Veins & Lungs, the charts combine scientific precision with the graphic sensibility characteristic of Victorian and Edwardian educational illustration. Their rich colors, detailed anatomical renderings, and original wooden rollers make them as compelling as decorative objects as they are historical artifacts.
$250.00 each
