🍲 DAY 3 COMPLETE: OUR YOUNG CULINARY LEADERS SHINED TODAY! ✨

What an incredible, hands-on Day 3 at the Mt. View Library Community Hall! Today, our Primary and Intermediate campers stepped up as camp leaders and took on an exciting culinary arts challenge: exploring local store shelves as expert shoppers! πŸ›’

πŸ₯¦Our young leaders learned exactly how to hunt for the right traditional ingredients, navigating the aisles for:
Fresh taro leaves 🌿
Canned coconut milk πŸ₯₯
Fresh green bananas 🍌
Fresh taro πŸ₯”

They didn't just shop, they learned the vital life skill of resourcefulness! Our campers practiced how to evaluate goods and find the perfect substitute spices and ingredients to ensure they could still create delicious, authentic, and traditional Samoan food.During their shopping exploration, our campers discovered a fascinating global trade reality: almost all of these traditional goods are imported to Anchorage, Alaska from far-off places like Fiji, Mexico, and China.

Learning this sparked an incredible spark of vision in our youth! Now, these young leaders aspire to grow up and be among the very first Samoans in Alaska to secure an official trade certificate to get goods and cultural foods imported directly from home in the Independent State of Samoa! πŸ‡ΌπŸ‡ΈβœˆοΈ

🌍 Fun Fact Our Campers Learned Today: Their big dream is backed by massive local power! Anchorage is a powerhouse on the global stage, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is officially ranked as the #1 cargo airport in the United States and the #3 busiest cargo hub in the entire world! Our campers are standing right at the crossroads of global supply chains, ready to make history. The future of our village kitchens and global commerce is in amazing hands! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

πŸ™ FA'AFETAI TELE LAVA TO OUR VILLAGE
A massive thank you to our incredible parents, families, and volunteers who helped chaperone, transport, and guide our shoppers today. It takes a village to pull off a dynamic culinary class like this, and your continuous support makes these unforgettable experiences possible for our youth.

πŸŽ‰ DAY 2 COMPLETE! WE HAVE MAGNIFICENT MASTERS IN THE MAKING! 🌟

What an absolutely spectacular, high-energy Day 2 at the Mt. View Library Community Hall! Our village was at full energy today, focus, and dedication from our campers was nothing short of inspiring.

Today’s big triumph was completing one of our most treasured Measina Samoa (cultural treasures), our campers successfully designed, crafted, and completed their very first Pale Fuiono (traditional headbands/crowns)! πŸ‘‘βœ¨

Seeing the children completely locked in, committing their focus to creating their own designs from scratch, and wearing their completed pieces with so much pride was a beautiful sight to behold.

From mastering the logical mechanics of weaving to splitting into our teams for the Siva Samoa and Fa'ataupati steps, our youth showed up ready to work and serve together today. Malo lava le fa’amalosi, campers!

πŸ“£ CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CYCLE 3 STUDENTS! 🌟

What an absolutely incredible opening to our Fa'asamoa Village Life Summer Camp! In proud partnership with Anchorage Public Library and Native Samoan Corporation, Day 1 was a success for our Cycle 3 Students and Campers!

Our Cycle 3 students started the week exceptionally strong today, diving headfirst into their Foundations - Fa'avae assignments and activities with so much energy and focus. From mastering the Numera (numbers) to mapping out their traditional geometric art patterns, their dedication was beautiful to see.

A major highlight of Day 1 was the exciting start of crafting their very own Pale Fuiono Measina Samoa (traditional headbands/crowns). Our campers were so locked into their projects today, and while lunch was great, their hard work, cultural pride, and commitment to their activities were clearly the most fun and important things to them!

To top off a perfect first day, we spent our final 30 minutes together outdoors, soaking up a gorgeous, beautiful sunny day in Anchorage, Alaska right outside the Loussac Library! β˜€οΈπŸ”οΈ

Honoring Trinity Noanoa Mulipola πŸ•ŠοΈ

Yesterday, April 30th, our Pasefika Roots Intermediate Class gathered with heavy hearts but a unified purpose. Our lesson took on a profound meaning as we dedicated our voices and our learning to a beloved fellow student, ambassador, and dancer from our partner, Ladies of the Pacific Dance Academy: the beautiful Trinity Noanoa Mulipola.

In honor of her vibrant spirit, our students began their journey into the soulful world of traditional Samoan hymns, focusing on the timeless "Mulimuli Ia Iesu" (Hymn 119, Methodist).

Why the Hymn? πŸ‡ΌπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¦πŸ‡Έ
Beyond the melody, learning these historical hymns is a vital pillar of Samoan Language acquisition and the preservation of Fa’asamoa.
β€’ Linguistic Depth: These compositions utilize a formal and poetic register of the Samoan language, helping our students master complex vocabulary and pronunciation.
β€’ Cultural Significance: Hymns like these are woven into the social fabric of the islands. Understanding their structure and cadence provides our students with the cultural literacy needed to navigate traditional ceremonies and community gatherings with respect and confidence.

We choose to honor Trinity’s legacy by strengthening our connection to the roots she loved so dearly. As our voices rose together, we carried her memory in every note.

Disclaimer: Pasefika Roots Institute is a non-religious and non-faith-based organization. We study these hymns strictly as linguistic and historical texts to further our mission of Samoan language preservation and cultural education.
