Owen and Georgia were fishing in the Lake Clark National Park area when they landed their first-ever Arctic grayling at the same time, PLUS both were big enough to receive trophy recognition!

They heard about Alaska’s Trophy Fish Program from their guides at All Alaska Outdoors during their stay. While fly fishing with topwater flies, they managed to get both fish to the surface.

Their advice? Stay patient, approach rising fish carefully, and try not to spook them. Owen said, "treat it a little like stalking bonefish on a flat".

Now Hiring: Fish Culturist 1 at the hatchery!

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is hiring a Fish Culturist 1 at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery in Anchorage.

This hands-on position helps raise, transport and stock fish throughout Southcentral Alaska while supporting hatchery operations and expanding angling opportunities.

The job includes:

Fish rearing, feeding and tank maintenance
Fish stocking and transport
Monitoring fish health and water quality
Supporting the statewide stocking plan
Equipment and facility maintenance
Interacting with the public

The Stream Slam Challenge is a great way to turn an Alaska fishing trip into a challenge to explore new waters and target different species.

Kerry took on the challenge as part of his retirement trip to Alaska. After hearing about Stream Slam from a guide at All Alaska Lodge, he spent several days fishing the Kenai River and its tributaries, along with a fly-out to Lake Clark National Park and other remote waters.

He completed his Stream Slam catches using fly fishing gear, catching grayling on a Griffith’s Gnat dry fly, a rainbow trout on a flesh fly streamer and a Dolly Varden on a smolt pattern.

For him, the challenge became more than checking fish off a list. It was a way to experience more of Alaska, from glaciers and wildlife to remote waters, solitude, and some great fishing.

His advice for anglers with limited time: having a guide helps.

Texas angler Cade always checks a state's fish and game website before a fishing trip to see what angler recognition programs are available. During a recent visit to Alaska, that led him to the ADF&G Stream Slam Challenge.

Fishing three streams in the Talkeetna area, Cade caught a rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, and Dolly Varden in less than 24 hours, and all on fly tackle. The grayling and rainbow took dry flies from the surface, while the Dolly Varden hit a streamer.

"Despite being right near town, these streams felt pristine, untouched, and had a fish ready to eat in every hole you'd think would hold one," Cade said.

By completing the Stream Slam Challenge, Cade earned an ADF&G certificate and joined the growing number of anglers who have caught these three iconic Alaska species within a 24-hour period.

His advice to other anglers?

"You can't catch fish sitting at home!"

Colorado angler Keith and his son Jeff traveled to Alaska with a personal goal: catch seven freshwater fish species in seven days.

During their trip, Keith caught an 18½-inch Arctic grayling while fishing near Lake Clark National Park. At his guide's suggestion, the fish was measured and qualified for the ADF&G Trophy Fish Program, something Keith didn't know existed before the trip.

The following day, the pair caught both a rainbow trout and a Dolly Varden on the upper Kenai River. Later, while looking into the Trophy Fish Program, Keith realized they had also completed the ADF&G Stream Slam Challenge by catching an Arctic grayling, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden within 24 hours.

"The Stream Slam and my trophy grayling were the best unexpected outcomes we could hope for," Keith said.

Congratulations to Keith and Jeff on completing the Stream Slam Challenge and earning a Trophy Fish certificate for Keith's Arctic grayling.

Congratulations to Ron on completing the Stocked Waters Challenge!

Ron discovered the challenge while browsing the ADF&G website and decided it was the perfect way to experience Alaska while traveling the state in an RV. Fishing entirely from shore, he caught rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, coho salmon, and Arctic grayling using small spinners and worms with light tackle.

Along the way, he visited about 15 stocked lakes and numerous unstocked lakes and creeks.

"I went to Alaska to see the scenery and to fish, and this challenge made sure I did both."

Ron also shared some advice for anyone interested in completing the challenge:

If the fish aren't biting, don't be afraid to move to another lake. Some waters are simply more productive than others.

Try different lures, colors, and bait. What works at one lake may not produce at the next.
