There is something satisfying about seeing a wall of Bees through someone else’s lens.

A few professional photographs from the first of two Sotheby’s Louisville installations, where hundreds of small objects came together to become one large piece.

Most people see a shiny gazing ball and think about where to put it in the garden.

I look at it and start wondering what might happen if I cut it apart and covered the pieces in nail polish.

That is usually how these things begin.

A small question turns into a studio experiment, and before long there are tiny metallic worlds scattered across the workbench.

This reel follows the process over several days, from curiosity to finished Bee.

In 1492, the world’s first globe was presented.

Five hundred thirty-four years later, I’ve been taking globe-shaped objects apart.

History takes some interesting turns.

If you saw yesterday’s post, you already know I’ve been experimenting with shiny spheres and seeing where they lead. Stay tuned tomorrow for a glimpse at the process on those.

Today is your look at this morning’s new Bees. As always, they’ll post at 10:30 EST. Which one catches your eye first?

I cut a silver gazing ball in half just to see what would happen.

The possibilities immediately opened. We started experimenting with nail polish, powder, texture, and whatever other questionable decisions were within arm’s reach of the workbench. Somewhere along the way, these strange little orb fragments started feeling less like garden decor and more like tiny objects from another world.

I’ll share the full process Thursday, but a few of these recently formed Bees will be part of tomorrow’s uploads. Set your alarms. They will fly fast!

Some artists make you want to immediately go home and start experimenting.

Revisiting the Chihuly installation at the Bellagio did exactly that for me. All that color, movement, texture, and scale still feels impossible in the best way.

It also brought back memories of the Chihuly inspired pieces we created years ago that were later published in the book, which remains one of those moments that still catches me off guard when I think about it.

I’ve always been fascinated by the way certain artists quietly change how you see materials, shape, and light long after you leave the exhibit.

What artist, place, or object has stayed with you and shaped the way you see things?

I may be the only person with a stairwell full of empty frames I can’t stop thinking about.

When an old frame catches my attention, I do not rush to make a decision. Sometimes the best thing you can do is live with it for a while...

The studio’s stairwell has become a holding place for frames I’m studying, considering, and waiting on the perfect piece to fill it. Each one has something to teach and stories left to tell.

Take a walk down the stairs with me and see what’s currently hanging in the studio. Make sure you stay to the end to see what happens when a painting finally finds a better match than the frame it arrived with. Then share this with that friend who always slows you down in antique shops.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the world’s first international chess tournament was held in 1851 in London, which means people have apparently been gathering to dramatically stare at small objects on a table for much longer than I realized.

And since it also happens to be New Bee Wednesday, I suppose it’s only appropriate that today’s uploads involve their own version of strategy, instinct, sacrifice, and the occasional regrettable decision made under pressure.

The new Bees arrive at 10:30 EST. Set your alarms and may your moves be swift.
